I have a small a/c-heater unit for the bonus room up stairs. Realized it was not blowing cold, went outside to look at compressor, the line is iced up.

Any idea? Coils need cleaning? (too dark to see)

Likely a freon leak. Don't keep it running with it frozen. Let the ice melt, and try it again. If it freezes again, turn it off and call someone out.

as the others say, refrigerant is low...

is it blowing air inside?...if not, turn it to fan only for a little while and let it thaw the coil out...

have to call someone to put some freon in it, though...

You sir seem to have a crack in the line somewhere. I used stop leak on mine and then put in some more Freon. You may need a new AC though. Let the line thaw and then turn it back on. If it is blowing cold air, it is probably a small leak. If not, call someone that knows way more than me about AC's. Good luck.

Turn off unit. Let ice defrost. Get someone to charge your unit with freon. It will continue to ice until you have the proper freon pressures. Continuous running while icing can cause compressor damage. I do not recommend stop leak. Freon is running $35-$50 per pound on a service call. Do not pay more or they are ripping you off. Get quote before they come out.

You are frozen due to low pressure caused by either a low refrigerant charge or you are not moving enough air across your evaporator. The latter is usually caused by a dirty filter, the evaporator coil is dirty, or the indoor blower motor has failed.

Check the filter first. If it's plugged, remove it and allow the unit to thaw by running just the blower. Start the unit again. If it freezes back up or if it's anything other than the filter, call a professional.

Either sufficient freon charge or insufficient heat transfer.

1) check air filter,
2) make sure fan is blowing
3) inspect both indoor coil and outdoor coil
4) call professional

Your filter is probably filthy and air can't get through.
