What size unit are you looking at?

How difficult will the installation be?

How old is your ductwork?

FWIW, I had a new unit installed a couple of years back. The initial cost pissed me off, but I have to say, I am much more comfortable in my house now.

Whatever you think it's going to be, double it.

Stay away from Lennox. They have knowingly used faulty evaporator coils. I’ve had to replace 2 faulty coils in 6 yrs. they are garbage.

I paid $8500 for a new 4-ton system a couple of months ago (Ruud, single stage). Prices usually jump about a grand come May, so pull the trigger now if you’re on the fence.

$8200 for 5 ton 14 seer Amana last summer with a little ductwork. Decent deal, happy with the work that was done.

Proper install is key. Properly installed Goodman will outperform and outlast a poorly installed Trane.

Best advice I can give is to get multiple quotes. I was doing a remodel on a big older home and for 2 new units (1 four ton and 1 five ton) got quotes of $27,000, $18,000 and $9,000. So after making absolutely sure the $9k quote include everything, which it did, I went with them and saved a good chunk of money.

+1 on staying a way from Lennox. They didn’t even bother to improve the coils. Warranty only covers the part. I’m right there with you gutta. Just replaced a coil and had to pay for that labor and new coolant.

Yes. I replaced the one set of coils under warranty and had to pay only labor and coolant...2 yrs later, that same coil failed again. This time, I had to pay for new coil, labor, and coolant. My biggest problem is that I’ve got 3 Lennox units??. They are hot garbage. If I could do it again, I would have gone with Goodman and taken my chances.

tell us where you live-if you want contractor recommendations

Secondly - understand the difference in brands and manufactuers. e.g Lennox and Rheem are brands. There are scores of brands

There are 6 MFG that make almost all the products.

The difference is truly the installer. Use a reputable contractor- Get 3-4 bids- , make sure you check references.

Repair is one thing, complete installation is another.

Spend a day and get 5-6 reputable contractors to come over to give you quotes. For a 4-5 ton, you'll likely get quotes from $6000-15,000.

Someone will want the job and bid for it. and likely at least 2 will try to screw you over on the quote.
