Yes until the ice is 100% gone do not turn the cooling back on. If you still see ice on the outside, I would imagine your evaporator coil is a block of ice.

For sure. That's Louisiana for you. AC in Feb. and snowing in April.

According to EPA regulations, it is legal to purchase a refrigerant such as 410a without a license, but you cannot legally use the refrigerant without a license. Not sure why they would allow non-licensed purchases, but I don't make the rules.

could be just the filter if it was clogged bad. maybe your intake is not properly sized or some other reason added on to the dirty filter causing not enough airflow over coils. could be low on freon.. only way to know is to let it run and then see what happens and also get someone to check freon.

If it cools tonight and tomorrow and I can wait til Monday to get a guy here, I'd imagine the diagnostic cost would be cheaper than the $129 for tomorrow.

If the filter was the issue than freon doesn't have jack shite to do with it. I do this every day. Two things cause 99% of all freezing, low refrigerant charge or lack of air flow caused by a plugged filter or a failed indoor fan motor.
When all of the ice clears and you fire it up the answer will reveal itself.

I just came from the attic. Literally squeezed the ice on the coil and it crushed and all fell off. No ice on anything now. Unit is still off and fan is on. Hasn't been a full hour yet though.

Check air flow and dirty fins on outside unit and inside unit(if split system).
Now the bad news if those don't work.
It's a sealed unit. So if your low on freon it's got a leak. I had this problem last summer when I first fired it up. They put r422 in mine which mixes with r22 and is cheaper. I was able to make it through summer and had it replaced in November out of peak pricing. Hopefully your leak is slow also. My unit was old and wasnt worth paying 1200 for the evaporater coil and labor to install. Wasn't able to be soldered where my leak was. They have these pens that will beep when it senses a leak. Might get lucky spot and can be soldered. Good luck man

Update: turned it all on after ice melted. Cooling down and feels much better. Hopefully it was just the filter but if not, at least I'll save some money by having a guy come out during the week instead of the weekend.

if you have a thermometer check the temp differential between the air at the intake and the air coming out of the vents. should be around 16-20 degrees difference. if its not you have a problem.

glad to hear that, man....hopefully, you can at least get through the weekend with it.
keep a close eye on it, as you don't want it freezing up and running constantly between now and Monday. when you see the airflow at the intake or the vents starting to decrease, switch back to fan only and let it thaw.

Exit vents in the house should be around 58-62F.
