Does the condenser/compressor run? You should be able to hear that. If nothing but a hum and a straining sound, and then a click and it stops...I'd guess your capacitor...

Walk outside and listen.

It's probably the contactor or the capacitor on your compressor outside.
Luckily, it should cost you less than $100 to fix.
Just find an A/C guy through friends that you can trust.

My 12+ yr. old A/C did this last year. We have a guy in the neighborhood that does work for "parts only" for the neighbors only.
It only costs $40 for the part. No Freon needed.

compressor. It's just sucking and blowing hot air. It will always be hotter inside than out in this scenario. Get your AC guy out there stat

he's on the way. better not be the capacitor. he just changed it last year. The fan on the outside unit isn't turning when its running.

Check to see if the coils are frozen/iced over. When it freezes over it will blow hot air. Turn your thermostat switch from Auto to just "fan" or "on". Leave attic door open and run it like that a while so it will thaw out. Works every time if that is the actual prob.

Fan motor is seized up.

Ther'ye fairly easy to change...

Take a screw driver or rod and try to give the fan a "jump start". It may start spinning....

I assume you've turned off the A/C. If not, do so. Can you freely turn the compressor fan with a knife or small stick? Or is it really hard to turn, or won't turn freely? If it won't, that's your problem, assuming you haven't burned up the compressor by running it without the compressor fan running. That and a new cap will cost what... 400 bucks? At least it would if you lived near Memphis. This I know from experience.

Could it be a busted thermostat?

Unlikely.

Your air handler is still working. Your compressor is either:

1. Broken

2. Low on coolant

Had this problem with mine several years ago. I don't remember what it was, but it wasn't very expensive to fix.

Sounds like an easy fix. The capacitor stores enough power to turn the motor over. If it's not storing power, there isn't enough to turn the compressor.

DIY A/C is illegal in most states but I'm a cheap arse DIYer and I'm going to tell you the most cost effective method without getting fricked in the arse by a crook.

If the A/C blows hot, 9 times out of 10 you're low on freon from my experience. All A/C system will develop a small leak over time.
Good chance it's R22 and you're fricked because the price skyrocketed over the last 3 years due to new refrigerant.

- Get R22 from ebay OR have a contractor recharge the A/C (more expensive obviously)

- Use this stop-leak. I had to recharge every year but after using this it's still going strong for 3 years now without needing to recharge. Don't listen to people who claim they don't work.

It's also a good idea to replace capacitor and contactor for maintenance reasons. Even when they were working, I've replaced at 10 years because I've heard they could go wrong soon.

I got the model number and bought all of them from ebay because it's a cheap insurance. Your local hardware stores don't sell A/C parts.

if the coils are freezing up he likely needs his unit serviced anyway though. That never a "common" problem that one should have to deal with.
