Louisiana’s Senate, with a 22 to 13 vote, has given approval to a proposal that would legalize medical cannabis, including state-licensed dispensaries. If passed into law Senate Bill 143 would allow those with glaucoma, cancer and spastic quadriplegia who receive a recommendation from a physician to possess and use medical cannabis. Unfortunately, the measure would prohibit patients from actually smoking the medicine, though it would allow them to consume the plant through other methods such as vaporizers, oils, tinctures, edibles and topicals. The bill would authorize ten medical cannabis dispensaries throughout the state – regulated by the Department of Pharmacy – which would supply the medicine to qualified patients. The dispensaries would be supplied by a licensed cultivation center. Senate Bill 143 now heads to the state’s House of Representatives, where its passage will send it to Governor Bobby Jindal for consideration.
