Yep, they are going to drill where the oil is regardless. The problem is, drilling may come back for a while in the US but then all that oil will glut the market and prices will crater again. If you look at the oil producing states in recession, most have low tax/regulatory burdens (i.e. Oklahoma, Wyoming). Also, Texas is near recession and the only thing keeping it from going south is a more diversified economy.

No doubt, and there's very little the government can really do about this

exactly, which is why when i see all these Trump supporters all excited about the pipeline and whatnot, i just shake my head.... oil may come back for a short time, and even then, after the last phased shut down, pretty much every company learned how to do more with less employees, how to be more efficient with less overhead, etc., so if/when oil does come back, it ain't coming back to where it was... it WILL be scaled down, because there's no real reason to hire 30 people when 20 can do the job needed...

thats what workers, especially guys from back home around Houma-Thibodaux, need to realize.... Trump's promises sound nice, but it's literally impossible for him to deliver on it, either in full or in part... jobs, even outside of O&G, won't always come back, despite what you try to do to spur the economy.... automation, jobs that have become obsolete, etc.... no matter how much it's promised, some of those jobs are never, ever coming back no matter how "bigly" he thinks he can do it...

Louisiana has nothing else.

I know we just have a few things going for us like
The largest and most important river port in the country
One of the top 5 tourist destinations in the country
Vast fisheries of various types of seafood
Huge producer of sugar due to climate
Huge salt deposits

As a state we have a lot of natural advantages over other states. The problem is we are ran by morons and we have a culture here that accepts it.

It'll take a lot more than just lower taxes. Other states can lower taxes too, remember the Thyssen Krupp steel mill deal back in 2007?

Infrastructure, access to markets and most of all a competent, adequate skilled workforce in the areas you want to build industry.

Just because you can build a auto factory or semiconductor plant in Tensas or Madison Parish for next to nothing with little tax burden, doesn't mean you can attract, retain or even train the talent necessary to make it productive.

Louisiana has some serious systemic issues to overcome before it will be able to properly diversify.

I never understood why our past Governors and legislatures didn't make a true effort to cut taxes so businesses would come to Louisiana. I feel now that Trump is pres. He could De regulate some of the crazy things past administrations posed on our oil industry.

Louisiana could be one of the richest states in the union if our leaders back in the day would've stood their ground and demanded "fair" compensation for offshore drilling revenues.

Instead, they made deals for themselves and screwed the state for an eternity. Life in Louisiana.

That was our good ole boy democratic politics. Lined everyone's pocket except our own state pockets. Thanks......... Corruption started at the top. And people still vote for those cronies. Look at the Landrieu dynasty. JBE is not much better.

I like the idea but could you imagine the type of people that would be flocking into Louisiana from Mississippi, Alabama and Texas.

Louisiana would become uninhabitable.

Meh - Louisiana has a pretty good tourism set up - and not just in New Orleans (although it is heavily centered there) - scads of folks come in for hundreds (thousands?) of conferences, conventions, festivals, carnivals, etc., every year, in addition to the fixed attractions.

The film industry, despite all of IBF's railing and windmill tilting, has gained enough traction to be a positive source of jobs and growth.

But, oil and gas has been and will continue to be a significant percentage of our more lucrative jobs that don't necessarily require much more than a HS education. We've got a lot of oil and gas. It is a volatile commodities-based industry. What else is there to do?
