Yep, they are going to drill where the oil is regardless. The problem is, drilling may come back for a while in the US but then all that oil will glut the market and prices will crater again. If you look at the oil producing states in recession, most have low tax/regulatory burdens (i.e. Oklahoma, Wyoming). Also, Texas is near recession and the only thing keeping it from going south is a more diversified economy.

No doubt, and there's very little the government can really do about this

Louisiana is an easy fix.

Tear up State Constitution.
Vote out whoever wont let that happen.
Drop Corporate State Tax to levels that support job growth.
Hire third party to build toll roads.
Stop voting for stupid shite.
Legalize Marijuana.
Stop letting people like me (STEM Grad) leave the state because there is nothing there.
End State Tax. Introduce Property Tax.
Make ISD system. Kill off private schools (Great Public Schools give families an instant 10-20k capital a year!)

Push blight out of city centers and continue raking in tourism cash.

Stop and Frisk in NOLA/BR.

------------------------------------------------------

Not needed but build Superdome 2.0 lol

------------------------------------------------------

shite god dammit I just listed everything Texas does. Dammit guys just be like Texas!

Louisiana has nothing else. Unless you cut taxes bigly to encourage business growth.

Our shithead governor wont do that though

High taxes are not the problem for Louisiana in attracting business. Louisiana taxes are actually pretty low, especially after two eight-year gubernatorial terms of extremely conservative Republicans sandwiched around one four-year term of ineffective Democratic leadership from Kathleen Blanco. Having one of the worst educational systems in the nation, one of the worst environmental problems in the nation, some of the worst infrastructure in the nation, a high crime rate and overall poor performance in nearly all quality of life criteria is why Louisiana can't attract much outside business.

"Business friendly" politicians and chamber of commerce types always promise that if you just lower taxes, ease regulations and reform the tort system, business will come. They're lying. Update infrastructure, improve education, clean up the environment, address quality of life issues. THEN, they'll come.

Of course then you have to take into consideration the Bible thumpers who won't entertain Marijuana as a viable industry because it's "uvv da Devil", therefore ignoring potential billions in revenue. Combine the former with the overwhelming portion of the population that makes meth, uses dead relatives' welfare checks, and/or will kill another human being over a pair of Jordans; and you quickly realize how sad Louisiana really is.

Hard to imagine that it was not all that long ago that Austin and BR were almost mirror images. One decided to explore other opportunities for economic development while the other continues to rely on historic economic drivers. Some real evidence supporting diversification.

Once recreational marijuana is legal nationwide our economy will boom along with Florida given that it grows so well here. In 20-30 years I predict we will see sugar cane and soybean fields replaced with marijuana fields. Pot heads on the west coast will be boosting our economy.

Whether you like it or not, the legalization of weed is inevitable. Lets just hope Louisiana isn't one of the last states to do so.

So we're not willing to approve any tax of any sort because we don't trust our government to spend it appropriately.

Then someone needs to introduce legislation to keep all funds in this transparent.

It doesn't make sense to continue with the shitty infrastructure situation.

Not at all. It is stupid to do so.

Sure, if Louisiana politics wasn't "business as usual".

We need more diversity when it comes to industries because all of the educated people are moving out of the state after they graduate college (brain drain).

When the strongest part of your economy is in the gutter, other areas start to follow (housing, retail, etc).

Of course. Especially when, in King Bobby's last fiscal year, the state of Louisiana actually paid out more in tax credits to businesses than it received in taxes.
