Was assigned to the City of East Palo Alto in San Mateo County from the 80's through 1999 when it was known as the Killing Fields of the USA. Highest per-capita homicide and violent crime rate in the country. My team and I used to joke that we should have pooled our money and bought some of those $20-30K shooting galleries. Should have done it. Just went on Zillow and crapped myself. Those same places are going for $850K-1.4 million.

I saw where people actually pay rent to pitch a tent in a back yard for 1000 per month in SF.

I have a friend who got a job offer to go out there. He was hesitant but his wife was all about it. She wanted the Sf lifestyle. (Selfish)
He had a good job and house in Houston. Saving money.
Traded that to rent in SF. Income is the same as in Houston.
He said at first he enjoyed the change and scenery. But has become more stressed due to cost of living and saving for the next stage in life. Kids etc.
Let me visit SF. Nothing more. I will happily take my $200k+ income in houston. Have my own house with a ton of space. Ability to travel. But also confidently go into the next stages in life.
Baby boomers are spoiled, but a lot of them focused more on more work to get what they want. Millennials think they are entitled to a lifestyle.

So that is what, 9 thousand a month. Say 7k after taxes and such. Any place big enough for a family of 4 in SF proper is going to be 4K a month. So you only have 3k in disposable income to support a spouse, yourself, and 2 kids
SO MOVE.
Its a difficult concept to grasp, I know but go find a less trendy and less expensive place to live. Don't make your kids go without just so you can live in the cool area.
fricking Cali twats. :smh:

I grew up in San Mateo. The little Eichler cracker box that was our house can sell for anywhere between 500,000 and 1 million today. I think we paid somewhere between 10 and 15 thousand.

These frickheads are driving up the prices of homes here in DFW and making the damn counties more blue.
fricking lose-lose situation going down here.

You simply don't have those problems in interior cities for the most part. Chicago can expand in almost any direction except northeast, and the Denvers and Houstons and Atlantas of the world can continue to expand in any direction. They also have much less restrictive zoning as an added bonus.
In Houston's case next to none.

You can't raise a middle class family on a total household income of 100,000..... anywhere.

Six figures is below the poverty line in Hawaii.

Yeah, but the commute to SF is a stretch.

Yeah that's not right. Closer to 5 or 6 after taxes.

You can't raise a family of 4 in Livingston parish on 100k.
Posted on 4/26/17 at 8:57 am to shawnlsu
I can think of lots of reasons why that might not be feasible. Job opportunity, family are two off the top of my head.
The view from the ivory towers of some in this thread must be great.

She drives from an hour fifteen to 2 hours each way per day. She goes from here to Petaluma, so we stay on the outskirts of it all. She fads a nice bump in pay for being out there though
