The Bay Area is so expensive, even some six-figure salaries are now considered low income. The Department of Housing and Urban Development just released its 2017 income limits summary. That's the baseline used to determine who can qualify for affordable and subsidized housing programs. For a family of four in San Francisco and San Mateo Counties, $105,000 a year is now considered low income. It's $84,000 in Santa Clara County. In Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, $80,000 is the low-income threshold for a family of four.

Yeah, for a family of four that's not a lot of money in San Francisco. Or New York. Or a lot of places for that matter.

So that is what, 9 thousand a month. Say 7k after taxes and such. Any place big enough for a family of 4 in SF proper is going to be 4K a month. So you only have 3k in disposable income to support a spouse, yourself, and 2 kids.

I can believe that.

$100K for a couple in parts of the bay area is struggling.

you are being too generous! My wife alone makes more than that and I can promise you she gets less than that after taxes and insurance, so it's even less

My wife and I make a healthy combined income and we are considered middle class in NJ, especially when we lived in Hoboken.

it honestly wasn't a brag. She does and she busted her arse in school to do so. Not a brag, just hard work. I only mention it to show the poster was way off on his/her estimates. That is all

Well pay is also better there, but taxes are also absolutely some of the worst in the country.

Yep, my sister makes a little under 100k and she only affords it because her work pays half her rent.

I was there last year and talked to a Stanford grad who said one bedroom studio apartments down by AT&T Park start at $2,500 per month. That is insane

Which is one reason national wage policy is ridiculous.

There's a really nice, brand new high rise condo building right by my office. I wondered how much a 2 bedroom apartment would cost...

$5300/month MINIMUM. For about 1000 sq ft. Pure insanity.

We live out in the suburbs and I am paying around $3800/month, all-in, for my mortgage, insurance, taxes, etc. Commute to work is about an hour, so that sucks. Our property value has increased probably $150K in the 2.5 years we've had it, though.
