4 Cancer Charities Are Accused of Fraud

There were subscriptions to dating websites, meals at Hooters and purchases at Victoria’s Secret — not to mention jet ski joy rides and couples’ cruises to the Caribbean.
All of it was paid for with the nearly $200 million donated to cancer charities, and was enjoyed by the healthy friends and family members of those running the groups, in what government officials said Tuesday was one of the largest charity fraud cases ever.
At the center of the operation was James T. Reynolds Sr., who opened the Cancer Fund of America in 1987. Over the decades, according to a complaint filed by the Federal Trade Commission and regulators from 50 states and the District of Columbia, he expanded the enterprise to four separate groups and was joined by his son, friends and members of his Mormon Church congregation in Knoxville, Tenn.
In its complaint, the F.T.C. called all four of the cancer groups “sham charities,” charging the organizations with deceiving donors and misusing millions of dollars in donations, including putting money toward personal expenses like carwashes and college tuition, from 2008 to 2012.
The other charities connected to Mr. Reynolds and named in the suit were Cancer Support Services, Children’s Cancer Fund of America and the Breast Cancer Society. According to government officials, the four groups spent the vast majority of the donations they received on fund-raising for more donations, reserving a portion for showering the groups’ workers and their friends with large salaries, bonuses and lavish expenses.
The lawsuit also accuses the charities of falsifying financial documents, reporting inflated revenues and overvaluing gift donations like plastic cutlery and Little Debbie snack cakes delivered to cancer patients. Such bookkeeping manipulations may explain how the scheme persisted for years.
Mr. Reynolds and his associates did not respond to messages on Tuesday. By the morning, most of the charities’ websites had gone dark. But the Breast Cancer Society’s page included a note from Mr. Reynolds’s son, James T. Reynolds II, the group’s executive director.
Mr. Taylor added that he thought cancer fund-raising was a favored target for perpetrators of fraud. “If you get a phone call, your response is ‘I know someone who had cancer, or I had cancer,’ ” he said. “Your instinct is to open your wallet.”

Then why mention it? This is the dumbest figure of speech and makes absolutely no sense.

most charities would shite their pants if the govt started snooping around their funds

I have a client and his wife who run a small, local cancer charity in the name of their deceased daugther. They don't pay themselves a dime. Every cent is accounted for.
They said this sort of the thing is rampant. Cancer charities is big business. All expense paid trips, huge parties, etc. Only very little of the donated money actually makes it to the patients. Sad!

It truly depends on the non-profit. Those that are willing to share their financial statements are typically seen as trustworthy.

Wasn't it Wyclef that raised a crap load of money for Haiti but kept most of it?

I think charities should keep their books open and let anyone who donates see where the money goes.
This makes me sick, because who doesn't donate to a cancer charity? The bank hit me up for a dollar the other day, Walgreen's and CVS have cancer drives.
Donations made privately in good faith to caner research and you get this? I stopped giving to Kommen when I found out as much went to salary and litigation as did cancer research, but now I feel like I need to research anytime I make a donation.

Sounds like the Clinton Foundation!

this part is very common in the charity world.
even the legit ones overvalue gifts a great deal.

Many of them do.
Also I cant link the website right now, but it has a list of hundreds if not thousands of charities and the % of the money donated that goes toward what they say.
There are some prerty well known groups that fall below 50%.
Very sickening, but it is a sick world. Send him and all his buddies to North Korea with the new piggly leader for a couple of years.

yep, its really sad.
I guess when I first really found out about this sort of thing is when the whole Koman deal blew up and it turned out their CEO was making more money than people running charities and organizations that are far larger and make way more money.

SAD SAD that any human being could even thnik of doing something like this..... Not that it would matter but they should be forced to walk around St. Juds for a few hours and realize just what cancer and other things can do to innocent young people.... They are braver than I will ever think of being.............
