One of the worst results of today's lazy teachers needing medical help to teach "hyper" boys. Boys are more hyper than girls in general. If and when I have kids, unless my son is completely off the rails, there is no way in hell I'm putting him on Ritalin or some other similar drug. We had plenty of boys in my schools that were problem children. The solution wasn't medication. It was discipline. They turned out fine, me included.

The problem is that because of boys' rambunctious nature, teachers are more apt to cater to girls at a young age because they're easier. This is human nature.

Don't believe me? Ask your teacher friends. Ask a teacher you know that isn't your son's or daughter's teacher since he/she will probably lie. I know there has been an article written on this in the past five years, but I'd have to drag it up from the depths of the internet.

While all of this is correct, there are also a lot of other shitty variables as to why women are outperforming men in schools.

My son was hyper in his earlier elementary days.

Medication, counselors, a week in Brentwood, numerous doctors, blah blah blah.

I finally had enough and at the risk of a divorce I told my wife I got this and told everyone else to butt out. Her family and mine were furious at me but guess what a year later he has gone from C's and D's to the honor roll and no more bouncing off the walls.

I just used the persuasion of belt to arse, working in the hot sun, hunting, fishing, showing him where he was headed if he continued. Plus he just grew up and matured.

No doubt, but early encouragement and success in school cannot be overlooked. Boys are medicated and disregarded by their teachers because they are more difficult than their girl contemporaries. If you are an 8 year old boy who is ridiculed by his teacher and/or ignored, the likelihood that you will develop a keen interest in learning is far, far less than if you are an 8 year old girl who is given constant reinforcement and attention.

Again, this is a generalization and there are plenty of girls who act out at school. Trouble at home is a major factor in a child's educational development and cannot necessarily be compensated for by a teacher. There is probably a link between a boy's educational development and the rise in single mother families as well.

But the bottom line is that the teachers of today push drugs on children and far more on boys than girls. Innately, the more attentive a child is, the more the teacher wants to teach that child. Why would you want to waste your time on an inattentive kid, right? The problem is that the children being ignored by teachers are by and large boys.

Coupled with the push for girls to succeed precisely because of the (somewhat rightly) perceived inequality in the workforce, today's boys are doomed to educational mediocrity unless a new mentality is adopted by not only the teachers and faculty of schools, but also by parents.

All of that is what we need more male teachers in the classroom.

Exactly. Discipline is different for different students. Boys need different discipline than girls. Time outs don't always work for boys. Additionally, it is a well-known and understood fact that boys mature at a later stage in life than girls. This is particularly true in an era when girls are given birth control at younger and younger ages. Girls are coming of age at a younger age than they have in the relatively recent past (there are many suspected villains causing this, including the lack of giving infants breast milk, which I find dubious).

But regardless, men mature more slowly, they require different discipline, and they need different praise and reinforcement.

As a father, you probably just saved yourself from having a 30 year old deadbeat living in your basement 20 years from now.

I tend to agree. But a teacher, particularly an elementary school teacher, has, like nurses, become a "female's job."

Male elementary school teachers are viewed suspiciously. By everyone.

there's a perfectly reasonable feminist point of view to be argued if you want to advocate for sexual freedom and multiple partners for both men and women.

granted there are a lot of people who discriminate against women who sleep around by calling them sluts - but some of them are women who don't want to sexually compete. and some of the women who are in favor of women being able to sleep around to experiment but are against men sleeping around for similar reasons are just hypocrites.

The more I read on it, the more I'm convinced that the over-diagnosis of ADHD is a result of our emasculating school culture.

JMO - I think there's a major problem in our society with not valuing academic performance... or at the very least not valuing it as a male characteristic

most of the imbeciles you see on sitcoms are now men - men who are countered by long suffering and attractive women as their partners... and when there are smart men on a show they are comic relief and the butt of most jokes

What exactly constitutes "housework"? Is painting the garage equal to doing the dishes? Mowing grass an washing cars equal doing laundry? Fixing the a/c and washing machine equal cleaning toilets?
