Happened to a man I used to work with here in New Orleans. I think it was not far from Touro where he collapsed and died.

Running is a very inefficient form of exercise.

People running for fun It only shows you that they've never had real fun.

You should only run when you're trying to get away from something.

Very sad, but I can't stand articles that don't attempt to explain what happened. Congenital birth defect, history of heart disease, etc. They just leave it open ended.

So you just want them to speculate? Good call.

In the past when I did cardio it was usually intervals but I have taken up running 3-5 miles several times a week and actually find it very relaxing and enjoyable.

Science

quote:

The study concludes: "Relative to other mammals, humans are economical walkers but not economical runners. Given the great distances hunter-gatherers travel, it is not surprising that humans retained a foot posture, inherited from our more arboreal [tree-dwelling] great ape ancestors, that facilitates economical walking."

I must have gotten my swimming ability from my tadpole ancestors.

usually congenital birth defects are found out WAAY before 32 y.o.

When a 30 something dies of a heart attack, you gotta think they either had a virus that hurt their ejection fraction (very possible), arrythmia (could happen to almost anyone, though not likely), or some kind of enlargement due to High blood pressure or drug use or some kind of freak blood clot.

he most likely had either hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome or a genetic channelopathy. HCM is usually caught on echo, but the others can easily be missed by conventional screening measures. It's really of matter of luck, either having it caught incidentally on EKG or being very close to medical help when you get thrown into vtach/vfib.

long QT can be caught if you wear a 24 hr monitor, but hardly anybody wears a 24 hr monitor if you don't have symptoms. I, for example, have very frequent pvcs and have had multiple echos, stress tests, and 24 hr monitors. Ruled benign, but I still opted for ablation for quality of life.

millions upon millions run halfs every weekend

Maybe not that many but add up all the distance races, tri races, bike races, and recreational runners and on any given weekend a lot of people are participating in endurance activities. Sadly, people do die during or just after these activities but at a rate less than the general population. Then add in the health benefits that this group has over the general population like less diabetes, lower cancer rate, less work days missed to illnesses, etc. and you get a different picture of things. Obviously there is a risk and there are documented health concerns associated with these activities but no worse than anything else you might pick to waste your time on.

Meh. Everything in moderation. Runners frick up their knees and do have heart tissue damage and enlargement (though it seems to be temporary)

If people ran in moderation (5 miles) and ate in moderation that would be optimal.
