I've always wondered how crack heads can keep those '96 Grand Ams going forever.

Never knew Chevy built that and called it a Monte Carlo.

i had a late-80's Grand Am that was nothing but trouble. Every time I brought it in to the dealer for service (all kinds of sensor issues), there was always a ton of Fieros in there for service.

I had a friend with a 3000gt and I had a real Montero and we both had that issue. Then started noticing people with Chyslers having that issue. Looked it up and found Daimler sourced engines out to Mitsubishi for Chrysler.

Well then, frick Mitsubishi.

All the Mitsubishi designed engines had the water pump driven by the timing belt.
So off the water pump seized, your engine likely blew.

Pretty common configuration (every Honda I've ever worked on is the same). I wouldn't call the Hondas "driven" by the water pump but it's all on the same belt.

Many Honda engines are interference based and a timing belt failure is a big deal. Also probably why many generally replace the water pump and timing belt at the same time.

Curious as to what made the water pumps "seize" in the first place (not a common failure for most brands).

I had one with the opposite experience. Standard transmission and the 2.5L - ran like a tank. The only problem I had was the oil pump, and usual stuff like the alternator/battery issues. I put almost 200k miles on it before a minor accident made it cheaper to trade than fix.
