Most companies forbid their employees from doing anything to shoplifters because there is way too much liability.

As does Walmart. Employees are allowed to ask them to stop but are not supposed to lay a finger on them.

I wouldn't steal from Walmart though. They have cameras everywhere. The exterior cameras can read a license plate from over 200 yards away.

we would have a lot less shoplifting if we praised these people
And a lot more people killing 12 year olds for stealing a candy bar and killing people who they thought were shoplifting but weren't.

Definitely a good idea to praise these people!!!

Fwiw, I praise them apprehending a shoplifter, but if he dies, they clearly went way too far.

The guy on the right looks like the kind of guy that is not to be fricked with.

Until there is clear evidence that they in fact caused those injuries, then the title is misleading.

That's a little bit more than simple detention, no?

Maybe he already had the broken ribs.

What should they have done? Asked him politely to surrender?

I was not implying that he did not need to be detained. I do think that the criminal's 15 broken ribs were from something a bit more harsh than merely holding him down.

Friend of mine runs an industrial supply company with that kind of rule and had to watch while a man waled in, grabbed a $1,000 plasma cutter and walked right out. He had it cabled to the wall and the guy just ripped it out. Many of these guys wear hoodies and sunglasses, you can't get much of an ID on camera.
