Most companies forbid their employees from doing anything to shoplifters because there is way too much liability.

Not even blu-rays?

That's about as useful as stealing VHS tapes.

Or HD-DVDs

Maybe he shouldn't have resisted the citizens arrest.

Do you think the 15 broken ribs tell a different story?

What should they have done? Asked him politely to surrender?

Someone who shoplifted deserves to die? Must be Trumptards.

No. He deserved to be tackled and restrained though. Which is what happened. Death was an unintended consequence due to the fact he was old and feeble

15 broken ribs= they beat him (not saying he didn't deserve it, but he was beaten)

I'm sure.

Because that was made clear in that 200 word article.

Fear of prosecution or litigation has made retail stores conform to a non confrontational policy. A guy can walk in, take what he wants and policy prevents anyony from touching him on the property. Its the norm rather than the exeption.

Yeah, he should have drank more milk, and not shoplifted.

man catching shoplifters was pretty much my favorite thing when I worked at a grocery store in HS.

This was before tobacco products were locked up and were out on an endcap by the registers and stores didn't have video surveillance. My boys and I had a triangulation system worked out. The meat dept had a straight on view, the deli/bakery dept flanked to the right and was next to the exit. Me and the guys on the stock crew would be rovers and when we had one we'd all move in slowly like a pack of lions. I'd go act like I was sacking groceries up and when the shoplifter would go to leave and have to pass by us, failing to stop at the registers and pay. BAM!

That's a little bit more than simple detention, no?
