BOSTON (AP) — Prosecutors moved to throw out more than 21,000 drug convictions on Tuesday, five years after a chemist at the state drug lab was caught tampering with evidence and falsifying tests.
The state’s highest court had ordered district attorneys in seven counties to produce lists by Tuesday indicating how many of approximately 24,000 cases involving Annie Dookhan they would be unable or unwilling to prosecute if the defendants were granted new trials.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts said Tuesday night that 21,587 cases had been recommended for dismissal. It said that would be the largest dismissal of criminal convictions in U.S. history.
The cases would be formally dismissed by court action, expected Thursday, the ACLU said.

Dookhan pleaded guilty in 2013 to obstruction of justice, perjury and tampering with evidence after being accused of falsifying her work as far back as 2004. She was sentenced to three years in prison and was paroled last year.

While it’s unknown how many cases Dookhan falsified, her conduct cast a cloud over the many thousands she worked on. As a result, in January, Massachusetts’ Supreme Judicial Court said prosecutors would have to show that they could retry these cases without relying on evidence handled by Dookhan.
Prosecutors said Dookhan admitted testing only a fraction of a batch of samples, then listing them all as positive for illegal drugs. Her motive, they said, was to boost her productivity and burnish her reputation.
Whole lot of . I imagine the lawsuits will be incoming once the charges/convictions are dismissed.

So, how much money did this end up costing the taxpayers, I wonder.

Spend 3 years in prison while her actions had people in prison as much as 13 years. Seems legit.

So she got out before the people she screwed over. Awesome.

This is the great country we live in. We spent millions putting 21,000 wrongfully people away -- most of which had to do with pot. Ruined a lot of lives. And now we have crackhead Sessions running the AG office talking about reigniting the war on drugs.

That's because there's a War on Drugs, not a War on Evidence Tampering
What a system

That's so evil to do that to people.

In a way I kind of feel bad for her. Obviously she fricked up and deserves every minute of prison time... BUT she's the lowest person on the totem poll. How much pressure did she get to flub the tests from her higher ups?
Her bosses, the DA, the police... Someone, some group of people knew what was going on and let thousands of people go to prison without actually checking if they were guilty- and that's the best case scenario.
The worst case is that they knew she was lying and did nothing because it made the arresting officers and DA's look good after every conviction. She was just a cog in the dirty machine.

It doesn't matter how much, the war on drugs must be fought at any cost. Children, think of them!!

And they wonder why black and brown people don't trust the law.
They should through her away for each years her victims had to serve

I'm sure someone in a gang or connected will place a hit on her.

She should get life at the very least and I would be on board for the death penalty. It's a total joke she was only in for 2 years.

Just because she falsified some tests, doesn't mean she falsified all 21k, or that all were wrongfully accused.

One, your grammer is bad.
Two, this is no different than people getting all pissy about deflate gate, you do what you have to to win. She may have gone a little bit above the law but how can you fault her when she's getting drug pushers off the streets?

3 years is a joke. She intentionally ruined the lives of thousands of people. She needs her life ruined as a result.
