Vidalia built a dr office, hospital, welcome center and hotel on the river side of levee. They recieved in excess of 500k to offset costs of sandbagging during 2011 flood. These buildings were built recently too, like in the last 15 years so its not like they didn't know that the river floods.

there's a dentist in Colfax who built a gorgeous house on the river side of the levee closer to Boyce. His house is about 8'-10' up on piers though. Also on a high piece on land next to the levee, but I bet he gets water in his outdoor kitchen this week.

Didn't see any cars along the parkway today. The cops are keeping it clear.
I do not mind the fishing, but the freaking trash they are leaving behind pisses me off.

Yeah they wised up and banned parking on the side and fishing in general.
I dont mind the fishing but I do mind the dolts that swing their car doors open and walk into the lane of traffic to get their snoopy poles out while brayden and brynlee play frogger at 55mph.

Meh. I actually don't have a huge problem with this. Taxpayers pay for every minute of a prisoner's life. A free-labor loan program isn't a terrible idea.

How did they get permitted for this, by the city/parish/ or even corps of engineers? I'm not familiar with this area. Also I would assume most of these houses have mortgages so I would think they would be required to have flood insurance. I'm sure their insurance premiums are pretty heavily subsidized by us tax payers

If these houses have a mortgage, they have flood insurance and the houses are built above the 100 year flood plain elevation. The river levee may be built to a 500 year flood elevation. All new construction must be above the 100 year flood elevation. Apparently, this is an event near 100 year or maybe greater. They received a permit from the Parish/Municipality based on that 100 year elevation.

Why is everybody suddenly fishing? I've never seen so many bank fishermen along the Red.
Do the fish bite better during a flood? Or is everyone just fishing because it is more convenient when the river runs by the shoulder of the road?

They might want to leave those sandbags up for a while. Saw earlier that the river is forecasted to remain near 27-28' through August. Cresting Saturday at estimated 34.5'. The 28' is just below flood stage and another big rain event or two upstream and up the river comes again. Possibly even worse than the river would be backwaters from some of the bayous if it stays high and a big flash flood pops up.
