It was written in 2012, SFP. Almost every state was finding ways to lower their spending. Most states are actually REQUIRED to balance their budget and more than just Higher Ed was cut.

Book production costs have decreased dramatically in that time period. Royalties have increased at ridiculous rates. E-books are provided on some campuses (Indiana, Missouri, etc.) at 1/3 the cost of a printed book.

So $80 instead of $240?

E-books still average around 80-100. They're not cheap either.

I don't want to shift gears too much or hijack the thread but this is the sort of stuff where I sympathize with the minimum wage increase crowd.

Now don't get me wrong, let me go ahead and state up front:

1) Minimum wage jobs were never meant to be career jobs and I know a lot of people making a fuss about the increase are damn McDonalds lifers.
2) Yes, college is expensive and some degrees just don't lead to high paying careers. Students should do their research beforehand.
3) Some people are just dumb with their money.

But, there are a lot of students that are genuinely looking to work to pay their way through college. Whether it's to help towards paying off the loans or just paying rent until they graduate and get a job and then pay off the loans.

Either way, the cost of living has gone way up and so have the costs of school and I think there are a lot of hardworking students out there that could use a bit of a minimum wage bump (and I know it has in some states).... even if that means there will be some 30+ year old at the Taco Bell register getting paid $15.00 an hour.

Garnet Way,

You'd just be making the inflation cycle even worse.

Which prevents you from borrowing a textbook or buying a used one. You still need the "online access code."

That's what happens when the Internet makes publishing books more expensive because the volume is no longer there.

Textbook prices are crazy and they come out with a new edition every year.

What a good life if you're in that business.

Colleges and Universities have literally every reason to raise admission rates for the simple reason that the money is there an available and necessary to employ professors requiring double what they did 10 years ago.

Professors aren't the root of the problem. Its the out-of-control administrative branch of major state universities that put the biggest strain on budgets and promote broadening admissions bases. IMO academic bureaucracy has taken on a life of its own, and it is relatively disconnected from the instructional aspect of the university.

I remember when I had to secure student loans to finish out my last year and a half, the cost of tuition for a semester was something around $1700. What is it today?
