This is a system that your ilk has created and fostered. When every act of authority/discipline enacted against a minority student at a public school is equated to racism or unfair practice and results in frivolous litigation....the teachers lose the will and courage to impose actions needed to address the problem. They can get fired or accept the role of being a paid babysitter.
The irony of you of all people blaming the teachers should not be lost on any regulars of this board. This is on you and those like you who have taken the power of authority away from the teachers to race bait at any chance. So GFY.

Fortunately the backlash is underway as the truth about this "culture" is becoming evident. Let's just hope Devos does her job . . . seems like hiring Muniz is a move in the right direction. LINK

Sped students aren't protected so much that you can't punish them or get rid of them. You just have to be on top of your paperwork. You can give them 10 days of OSS and anything over that you have to have a meeting to determine if their disability is what caused the write up.

No troubles for four years yet the sheriff felt the need to start providing a full time deputy starting in 2003.
Nice reach. We had a school resource officer (town cop) that was on campus. Not sure about why it changed from town cop to sheriff deputy, but it wasn't because the school was in a state of anarchy.

Mac checked out. Literally. Got so fed up with the principal's bullshite. Turned his keys in and has been living the retired life at Brushy Bayou.
I don't live in PB anymore, but I did talk to some friends and they are saying that after this school year, the busing in of Opelousas residents is ending. Now, if they can get there on their on gas, they can still attend PB. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a turnaround for the students, staff, and community.

Good guy. Went to McNeese with him. Many nights at Lilly's and Mrs Kitties. First night I met him he was with a mutual friend and he "got involved" to help us even out the odds in the parking lot. When we left there were 3 still laid out, he had Ko'd one of them.

He married a Mrs. Kitty. That's not her real name, but that's what she goes by.

Before the last UL McNeese game, the one before that -years ago- we were cooking a pig in a box on the grounds outside the stadium with some guys from VP. A van pulled through with some UL guys and they yelled something. Next thing I knew bucket's dad was hanging on the passenger side door, wailing away on one.

I was at PBHS 87,88,89. I was there when Coach Mac got there. He definitely helped our baseball team when he arrived. Bob Causey was a good guy but no baseball coach. My time at PBHS was pretty much drama free. I was bused from Krotz Springs and some of my best friends were from Port Barre. Sorry to here they are bringing in all that trash now.

Between advocates and attorneys these kids are RARELY ousted anywhere near the regular student population. Imho, this is the main reason public schools are struggling. If the culture of a school is negatively dictated by 10% of the student population, that school will usually have major disciplinary issues. This scenario plays out waaaaay more than people think.

I don't know what to tell you. I've worked a several high schools with different makeups. We have always been able to get rid of sped students who deserve it. Even if they bring lawyers or advocates we bring our own who still get them out. Plus your rate of 10% is way high. Around 10% of schools are sped generally but only a handful of them are a problem. And if your paperwork is in line they are gone with little hassle.
Edit: and sped kids are not even close to being a major reason why schools are in decline.

You sound well versed in SPED regs, you familiar with FAPE?

We will have to agree to disagree. My experiences at multiple high schools and junior high schools with LARGE SPED populations, and police feedback, is what I base my opinion on.

Maybe things are different in La compared to Ga. We get rid of them on the reg. The only time we've struggled was when an EBD student who threatened at teacher. They brought lawyers and instead of getting him out for a whole year he was allowed to finish out the year at a mental hospital instead and return in the fall. But every other sped student we just have a manifestation meeting, bring our paperwork showing it wasn't their disability that caused them to fight, bring drugs, have sex at school, or whatever the offense was and they get sent to our alternative program for a semester or their entire high school career.

Our Pupil App people don't want to hear about Behavior Manifestation. It's, "10'days is all you have."

Surprise surprise. I'm sure that the busing of problem children is not helping PBHS but those saying it was a good school are reaching. That place is a waste land and 9/10 PB kids that I ran across through HS and college were not good ppl. I'm not saying that they were shooting and stabbing ppl but just wild. No moral ground and as I got older I've learned that it was tought by the parents. That community is in a class of its own.
Posted on 4/9/17 at 11:16 am to Geauxtiga
Oh yeah. We hand out ten days for fights, drugs, or alcohol. Anytime they commit another offense that needs OSS we call there parents, have a meeting the next day, tell them their LD didn't cause them to fight and we get rid of them for another ten days. Eventually we put them at the private run alternative school. I will say the county told us to slow down because we were putting more kids there than any other school.
