That way I can have a say in my exit date and terms, if need be.

I'm with you. Lost my Dad to Alzheimers and it runs in the family, first confirmation of it and I'll execute(so to speak,) my exit strategy.

Lynda passed awhile back. Richard still goes to the track, but he leaves early. He even missed the 43 winning Daytona this year.

One in four for the children of someone who had it, I've been told, assuming one lives long enough. So we've got that going for us.

Nasty bidness.

Be leery of 1960's muscle car horsepower claims.

I know, the HP ratings were notoriously underrated.

Lol no sorry to burst your bubble. SAE gross vs SAE net. They were measured on gross in the muscle car era which gave them unrealistically high numbers. As soon as they changed the standard to net the numbers fell right off the map. Check out the numbers published by the auto mags in recent years - they put them on chassis dynos and the numbers are not near what was claimed.

Ferd Torino with a vette nose grafted on. Fugly but effective back in the day. They shoulda put a wing on it and put them on the track.

Back in the day when NASCAR actually drove stock cars, the manufacturers had to make so many of a model before it qualified to be raced. If I recall, they had to make 2 times the number of dealerships they had nationally. The Superbird is probably the best example of this. Some of these prototype race cars can be worth a lot of money today. I don't remember the year, early to mid 60s I think, Ford made an all aluminum bodied 500 that they raced and those street versions are worth a good bit now.

I don't know the reason behind the revised history, but a simple google will find more articles supporting my statement than what you claim. I lived those days, and under rating HP was the common belief at the time.

I believe the skin of my bubble is thicker than yours. No bubble bursted.

I've always heard motors back then are overrated by today's standards for the reasons he mentioned (different SAE measurement). They tested motors with no accessories and no emissions equipment.

The answer is they are both right. Factories would under-rate for insurance purposes and ratings would change later on whem measuring standards changed. The under-rating was most common in the pony car segment.

I personally think "understating" was the result of backwoods shine brewers making shite up.

I have a very hard time
Believing anybody ever in history would advertise below actual power.

buddy of mine's wife got him one of those retro mustangs with a huge engine in it a couple of years ago, it's got a "racing switch" in it that downloads all accessories and non-essentials from the engine when you're ready to throw down for pinks
