Yep. People forget that at one time we had over 500 in a year.

not at all. New Orleans improving =/ a utopia or an absence of problems

I compared New Orleans against New Orleans chief. So when I say this:

quote:

Nola is the best it has ever been

and you say this:

quote:

besides the bum population and the murders, yes, it is

it kind of implies that you believe otherwise. This last year was the lowest murder # since the 70's when the feds really started taking an interest in gathering the statistics.

The murder rate in New Orleans dropped almost 20 percent last year and is down 40 percent since 2003, but its rate is still one of the highest in the nation at 42 per 100,000 residents, more than eight times the national average. And as always, data can be deceiving; part of the drop is explained by the survival rate of shooting victims.

weird how the source of the bold portion links to an advocate article that no longer "exists"

You think having a bunch of overcrowded, sweaty jazz clubs and a signature fried shrimp hoagie makes you immune from being labeled rednecks. Not true. You are rednecks with an inexplicable superiority complex. New Orleans is the birthplace of so many awful things: goth culture, actors trying to get extra "realness" cred, Dan Aykroyd's music career, writers who co-opt the city's poorest residents for their own moral grandstanding, an economy based solely on tit beads, and natives who earn a living off of tourism but make every effort to let tourists know they don't "get" their shithole of a town and never will. New Orleans is a cesspool. The only way it can get better is for the black community to leave and tax paying community to come back. That of course will never happen because the schools are the only thing worse than the crime problem.

If it wasn't for the culture it would have been Detroit a long time ago.

It has been happening

quote:

Forbes has ranked greater New Orleans as tied for the title of No. 1 "Brainpower City" in the U.S., based on the percentage growth in college graduates between 2007 and 2012. In that time, the New Orleans region gained 44,005 graduates, an increase of 20.3 percent, almost twice the national average of 10.9 percent.

. In fact, Forbes named the Greater New Orleans Area No.1 Metro for IT Job Growth and No. 2 Best Big City for Jobs in the United States. Other accolades have included rankings as the No. 2 Employment Market in the Country, America’s Best City for School Reform, top city for entrepreneurs on two separate lists, and No.1 on the list of America’s Biggest Brain Magnets for drawing people under the age of twenty-five with college degrees.

Forbes

Tearing down the Iberville projects for a shopping development will also be great for the quarter area

quote:

Evidence also shows that the growing population is not just the result of returning residents, as newcomers have also been lured into the city. In fact, according to a study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, one in nine current New Orleans residents were not living in the area prior to Hurricane Katrina. The group represents a demographic of people who are more likely to be younger and better educated, further contributing to the city’s recovery and reform.

quote:

That of course will never happen [/b]because the schools are the only thing worse than the crime problem.

quote:

The Recovery School District has also been a catalyst for reform, aggressively turning around a public school system that was on the brink of deterioration. Today, New Orleans leads the nation in percentage of public school students enrolled in charter schools with 70%, and as a result, the number of public schools designated to have had “failing” standards has significantly dropped. Although not yet perfect, the standardized testing scores are improving, as well.

Before Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans in 2005, 65 percent of the city’s public schools failed to meet standards, according to data from Louisiana, which U.S. News and World Report placed as 46th out of 50 states in a 2013 education ranking. The city fired approximately 7,000 teachers and public school employees, in the aftermath of the disaster, opting to completely start over with charter schools and with new teachers and other staffers.

Now only 6 percent of the schools are failing, educators say, and charter school supporters are heralding the turnaround as a major success.

Don't waste your time, people who bash NOLA won't change their minds. I love living here, you love living here, who gives a shite if other people don't? Not to mention people living in BR.
