What fricking moron thought it would be smart to take a single engine sub 20 ft boat 161 miles south of SW Pass? Darwin Award winner here.

Some of my buddies take a single engine 24' offshore regularly, I refuse to go with them.

Dumbasses have only gotten stranded once, didnt learn their lesson.

I have a buddy with a 21' single outboard boat that keeps asking me to go offshore with him and my answer every time is "add 4 feet and another motor, and I'd love to". frick that I'm not going swimming or drifting and not have the shore in sight.

Bay boat or true center console? Either way I don't think I'd go offshore in that. People are dumb. I'm about to buy my first boat. Gonna be a bay 20' or 21', either way, I'm never going past the island.

Something doesn't add up here, not sure a boat that size has the fuel capacity to get out there, much less make the round trip.

Same reason why small planes crash fairly often.

Some guy gets one, takes it out for a spin enough times to start to get the confidence to do something that is pretty stupid like the boat owner.

The idea seems awesome until reality steps in and outplays human ego

Was thinking the same thing, a boat that size has max about a 30-40 gallon tank. That doesn't make any sense.

He could have at least 40-50 gallons, could have broke down or ran out out gas and drifted that far before they capsized

I have some cousins that used to do goofy shite like that in a similar sized boat fishing for marlin near Petronius/Ram Powell/Horn Mountain (boat left out of Biloxi).
They'd extend their mileage by sticking a topped-off 55 gallon drum of gas on deck for fuel backup.

Did that several times...used it going out...represented half our fuel....when it ran out, all movement was toward home.

People do stupid shite. I have friends who went 5 miles out of camanada pass in an 18' surface drive.

I'm betting this boat has been floating around a while and drifted that far out.

Same thing with private pilots, they know just enough to kill themseleves.

A lot of boaters are no different.

Yep, the fuel thing doesn't add up, no crew found... Boat had to drift from somewhere.. Sounds like some Devil's Triangle type of shite...

Im in a 21 Cape Horn with a single 300hp. I would not go 161 miles S of SW pass. I'll run out to Freemason Island from Venice and 10-15 miles offshore but that about it.
