This is a really sad story.

I honestly did not think that bullying can cause so much anguish and frustration. I've seen several cases similar to this now, although this is the youngest I've seen.

I suspect that it may be worse among girls than boys.

Our nation doesn't have a bullying problem. It has a parent problem. So many weak parents.

If my parents would've caught wind of me teasing someone for medical issues, they'd have beaten my arse with a belt, made me apologize, and taught me a lesson. Then again, that also never happened bc my parents taught me to be respectful (for the most part) in the first place. We also aren't supposed to discipline our children anymore in that manner. Apparently you can reason with 11 year olds. If they are cruel, you just withhold ice cream or cancel TV time. Maybe give them a stern timeout.

I am sorry but if an 11 year old is committing suicide there is parenting issue. Bullying has become such a buzz word and the first thing people go to when someone isn't nice. People aren't always nice. I was a teacher at a middle school and maybe I was just at a good school but the handicapped students were always taken care of by the students. I'm not saying some arsehole didn't make a comment at some point but overall the kids were very accepting. Most of the "bullying" complaints came from kids that were trying to be different and getting offended when someone called them weird.

I agree with you. Parents not only teach their kids not to bully but also teach them how to handle bullying.

When I was 11, I also had no idea where my dad kept his firearms.

There may have been underlying personality issues, too. After all, the child had a BRAIN tumor. Not that I'd blame the kid. Just taking a balanced look at the situation.

Kids are cruel and they will always be peer pressure.. So kids are going to follow the "cool kids" so I have to agree.. I understand parents want to protect their kids, but you can't hide them from reality. In fact, you have to tell them about the reality of things.

My dad use to tell me "people will try to take advantage of you because they will see you being in a wheelchair as a weakness. Don't let that happen. Do whatever you have to to make sure it doesn't". It got me in trouble at times. If someone tried to "take advantage" or start saying something to me, I would tell them stuff to the point they would get upset I said whatever I said to them and go "tell on me". There were times when I would explain my side of it and was told "you can't always use that to your advantage".

But in this case, this girl had brain cancer.. That might have impacted the function of her brain... It seems like teachers/admins would be more aware of these things, but at the same time you can't watch everything they do.
