this will probably also happen in a honda accord. kids drive fast.

I used to see how fast I could drive a Ford Escort Station wagon around the curve at Burbank heading towards Siegen.
80 mph drunk as frick leaving Tigerland.
For fricks sake, I hope my kids aren't that stupid.

It's not like that's a lot of money for cars today

That'll get you a nice truck and a step above entry level luxury sedan.

The sticker prices on my wife and I's vehicles was over $75k, and they're nothing special.

This quote puts you in the running for Father of the Year.

When I was in high school, I had a new 280ZX Turbo my junior year and a new 300ZX Turbo my senior year. I lived to tell about it. Did I have my moments in the cars? Certainly. But my kid has a much different mindset than I did back then, and with the monitoring systems they have today, he knows that the first time he's caught he'll lose his driving privileges. He also knows that just one ticket will make his insurance unaffordable (and he'll be responsible for a large portion of his insurance).
I have never bought into the argument about fast cars though. I could buy him a Honda Civic, but he could still drive 60 on residential streets if he wanted to or drive 100+ on the interstate. And I think a kid with a Mustang GT has a lot less to prove. Everyone knows it's fast, so there's nothing to prove.

Buy the kid an old big block gm car then he won't be able to afford to go fast and you can modify the car to handle like it's on rails for you to take to the track.

It's like you didn't bother reading my post. I didn't pay that much for them, and it's not an impressive number in this day and age.

You can't buy a Tahoe with leather for less than $50k.

A 68 anything is a death trap, IMO. I understand your sentiment, but those old cars will get a young driver killed with the quickness.

I had a '62 Buick Skylark and then a '68 Camaro. A 440HP Mustang will get you killed a lot faster.

Make the kid do a disc brake upgrade to the front of the '68 Stang and it has proper seat belts. And have it checked to make sure it's done right. He'll be fine.

If safety is the #1 concern, get him a Volvo.

Having worked on my rides a lot in high school, I appreciated them much more than just have keys to a new car thrown at me. I'll bet you did the same as me when you were that age.

I did read your post. $50K for a vehicle is a lot, regardless of how much money you make.

You ever seen a classic car get in a wreck? The new Mustangs are exponentially safer than a 68 anything.

If you are worried about insurance cost...it will be much cheaper to have the kid drive a 3rd car (4 cylinder accord or camry), you get a moderately nice car (relatively new Acura TL) and your wife a moderately nice crossover or SUV...and you still should be under $100K for all three cars.

If it is cheaper for a 16 year old to drive a Macan S, than a 4-cylinder 3rd car...then you have the wrong insurance.

You're a moron if you buy your 16 YO son a new Mustang GT.

Make the spoiled brat work for something. But him a 68 mustang fastback that needs work and get him some tools. It's called 'character building.'

My kid has worked his arse off, in school and out. He has over a 4.4 GPA with 4 honors classes in his first year of high school, and he tests in the 98-99th percentile. He has also transformed himself from a chubby little bookworm into one of the top martial artists in the country in his age group. He was making $300/day teaching seminars and $50/hr. for private lessons at age 14 because he put in the work to reach that point. He wants to study Mechanical Engineering at LSU. I'm teaching my kid that busting your arse in everything you do is the path to success and you get rewarded for it.

Nothing is safe at 150 MPH.

For the record, my '68 Camaro had a roll cage. And the sheet metal on those classics were much better than the plastic and aluminum foil on today's cars.

Again, if safety is a factor, why would you buy him a new GT? Get him a fricking Yukon.

Doesn't seem like you get that being able to spend $50k on a vehicle IS BRAGGING.

It's very easy to get away spending half that on two great vehicles though.

I personally will never spend more than 50k on one vehicle.

I'm currently looking to buy two vehicles and exactly what I want, new, I can walk out the door for under 60k.

They make safe automobiles for $15k. Why someone wants to spend $100k on cars is beyond me. Put it towards a condo or land.
