Got a job offer in San Jose for $100000/year as an Engineer. Since the cost of living is in a complete new league compared to Louisiana, is this salary worth anything or is it chump change compared to the the California standard for a single person?

I would think you could live very comfortably as a single person making that much.
Subtle brag thread.

I would assume San Jose isn't as bad as San Fran but you need to make about double over there to live the same lifestyle.
As an example, a cheap 1 bedroom apartment in San Fran will run you $2,500.

I don't see it as a brag. If he made the same thread about moving to Baton Rouge sure but that's like being a McDonald's manager in that area of Cali

I'd never move to California for 100k. Make it 200 and I'd think about it

That's not much for San Jose. If you want to rent a small apartment, I guess it wouldn't be that bad.

Don't move to East Palo Alto or East San Jose.

What are your wants as far as tenement go? You'd live very comfortably if you wanted you. The bigger question is whether or not you'd like the Bay Area.
It's beautiful, temperate, and close to most any type of activities you could be interested in. The pace of life, awful traffic, heavy concentration of tech nerds, and poor female-to-male ratio would be some of the negatives off the top of my head.

That will just about cover your water bill.

That's 25% above the average household income in San Jose. Income per capita in San Jose is $33k.

A basic cost of living calculator will show you that a comparable salary here in Baton Rouge would be approximately $65,000 per year. So you can use that as a guide, I suppose.

Don't need anything but a simple 1 bed room apartment. In a fairly decent area.

You take the offer?
Where do you work now?

But it's definitely enough for a single guy.

100K ain't much in that part of the US... plus they have some water supply issues in that state that i'm not sure i'd want to plant myself in their situation right about now....
congrats on the offer, but i'd look at my other options if i were you....
