In a recent interview with Mike Freeman, Cuban indicated that he would be against NFL expansion. He said he was against expanding in the NBA. Here is a quote from the Freeman interview.
quote:

When you add a team, you have to give them their share of profits," he said. "So, teams would split things by 33, not 32. The franchise fee has to be enough to more than pay for the share of revenue teams are giving up. It's the same reason I voted against expanding in the NBA. ..."The question isn't whether it's worth it for the new owner. It's whether it's worth it to the NFL owners."

Mike Freeman reflected on Cuban with this thought.
quote:

If there's no true expansion, there could be years of teams threatening to move—maybe even to places like London or Mexico City. More cities could be held hostage. Build us a new stadium, or we'll move.

Again, Cuban is often a few steps ahead of almost everyone else in sports. He might see something no one else does. He's that smart. And if what he says is accurate, any expansion would lead to significant financial loss for owners unless a new buyer paid several billion dollars for a team.

So maybe we should get used to a 32-team league. It might stay that way for decades.

He may be in the market to buy an existing team by all his comments. If he promised to build a new stadium and not move the Saints, would Saints fans be on board? Just imagine, Rita and her non-voting shares are gone. There would ownership stability, a new stadium, and future Super Bowls in New Orleans.

An easier link read other than the bleacher report for the full Cuban interview can be found here.

i don't know how Saints build a new stadium. location location location and the super dome spot is ideal.

Could always move the game to Tiger stadium for a year or two, demo the dome and some of its surrounding buildings and build up. Big problem you'd have is the arena/pelicans.

The location is too ideal unless we're starting to think about moving/making an arena that sits on the river downtown, but thats completely stupid in terms of risk

It's pretty much understood that if New Orleans was to get a new stadium, there would be a temporary game day relocation involved. All things are temporary, even the Dome.

They have a big enough spot next to the convention center f they had to build a brand new stadium. But the beauty of the dome is it could be completely gutted and reconfigured.

Baton Rouge is terrible at supporting the Saints

It would be necessary for a while but we'd have bad attendance for that time

Cuban strikes me as a guy who would move that team the second he got it. Sure, they can put in provisions to say he cant move the team but there are loopholes for everything.

The Sonics fans were told all the time that there team was no threat to re-locate. I dont believe anyone when they say that.

Cuban may be a great owner...but i dont trust him at all for the long term future of NO.

Absolutely. I love Cuban and he'd be great for the franchise plus he's loved immensely by his players.

There are some very specific rules against owning an NBA and NFL Franchise in different cities. Specifically, I think its you can't own an NFL Franchise if you own an NBA Franchise in a city with an NFL team (Excluding, obviously, the same city).

Dallas has an NFL team, he owns an NBA team in Dallas. New Orleans has a NBA Team.

They didnt support that team after katrina because Benson was trying to move the team at the time. No fanbase responds well to those threats.

Completely different situation. People would line up to watch them play.

Under the NFL you cannot own another sports team unless the team is in the same city as your NFL team OR in another city with no existing nfl team. Cuban cannot own an NFL team besides the Cowboys without selling the Mavs.

1. He would have to sell the Mavericks since NFL rules do not allow an owner to own another major pro sports team in an NFL city.
2. Donald Trump would have an easier time buying an NFL team than Cuban.

Where would Cuban or any other owner move the team too?
Dallas- already got a team
San Antonio - would be blocked by Dallas and Houston
Las Vegas - more than likely getting the Raiders
San Diego - would be blocked by Rams and Chargers
Oakland - ha they can't even fix the sewage problem
London - doubtful

As long as the fans support the Saints the way they have the last 10 years no owner is going to move the Saints anywhere. Pelicans are another story and there is another board for that, but the only place the Saints might go is to BR for a few seasons while a new stadium is being built.

London will never have a team. What free agent wants to go to a city where every away game requires a minimum 8 hour flight to get to it?

He could sell the Mavs then turnaround and buy the Saints and Pelicans. He would obviously need assurance from both leagues to make it happen. He would make more money on selling the Mavs then the cost of the Pelicans.. So it could happen.
