Per Rotoworld-

quote:

Rodger Saffold - T - Free Agent

Ex-Rams G/T Rodger Saffold has failed his physical with the Raiders, voiding his five-year, $42.5 million contract.
He's once again a free agent. It's to the point where we just feel bad for GM Reggie McKenzie, who is simply out of his depth. Valuing Saffold more, the Raiders let perfectly fine in-house option Jared Veldheer walk. Now they have neither, and a titanic hole on Terrelle Pryor/Matt McGloin/Unsigned Free Agent's blindside. As for Saffold, it wasn't exactly a secret that his health was a question mark. He's missed 17 games over the past three seasons. More versatile than effective, he'll go back to shopping his wares as a guard who can play tackle. It's quite possible he'll end up back with the Rams on a bargain deal. The Raiders are going to be historically bad (again) in 2014.

So far into the Payton/Loomis era, we haven't had any major whiffs in free agency. Maybe Jason David, but nothing on this kind of level. I feel bad for Raiders fans.

I think this is a good time to discuss the worst FA signings of the PayLoo era.

Im not sure being strung up against the cap every year is a reason to be thankful for loomis, we have overpaid plenty of our in house players

We've been strung up against the cap for the last 3-4 years, yet we have signed Drew Brees to a (at the time, record breaking deal), a top flight cornerback in Keenan Lewis, a leader and reliable thumper in the middle with Lofton, and now arguably the best FS in the league. Couple that with keeping Marques Colston and soon Jimmy Graham, I think the salary cap management argument can take a back seat because it's shite.

Most probably the worse FA signing since FA started. Got got bailed out on this one...but there's still time for them to screw up again!

The contract was terrible, but what's really bad is that they have nothing now because they refused to pay a superior player less money WHO WAS ALREADY ON THEIR TEAM! Saffold wasn't worth that much, but he would have been better than nothing. Shame on McKenzie for putting all of his eggs in one oft-injured basket.

While Loomis may be one helluva bean counter, I'm not impressed with the track record of our 1st round picks working out. And his piddling around with Brees' contract cost us Carl Nicks.

If he didn't make space and find ways to sign players, then yeah, I wouldn't be grateful, but it's yet to happen.

Sometimes I feel like the Pats' FO get praised for the same reason that the Saints get blasted.

Because Nicks has been an All-Pro since he got paid by the Bucs.

The main argument I'm making anyway is that Loomis is a great bean counter as you say and very good at both attracting free agent talent as well as evaluating it. Give me 5 teams who have really been more creative and effective at improving their team via free agency.

And if the Saints really wanted to keep Nicks, they would have found a way to do it. I just don't think they were willing to give him the money he wanted, and that would have left us with a one year rental under the tag, which wouldn't have helped us much at all.

It's not good to live in a world of what-ifs. What we do know is that we didn't want to meet Nicks contract demands. Before it was staph it was turf toe in Tampa. Who knows, he may have stayed healthy here, but he could have blown out his achilles, too.

He was looking to be the highest paid guard. We weren't going to do that. We could have, but we didn't.

So say you caved in and gave Brees the money he wanted before the deadline, and you used the tag on Nicks. You don't sign Grubbs. Would that have been a better outcome? This is 2012, the lost year. If anything, we get a higher pick, and we'd either miss drafting Vaccaro or have to trade up to get him.

Brees and nicks? We could have squeezed it possibly

What other big contracts have we shelled out?
maybe we give up colston, lance and his dumb contract, and harper and his dumb contract(i give him this bc we really didnt have any options).

I for one would take nicks. Dude was the straight up best guard the year we won.

Would he be healthy? would he stay motivated?

I guess we will never know.

Alls I know is the o-line is in a terrible place right now. I really am not high on grubbs; i mean he's not bad by any means, he's a above avg guard, but he's not a game changer like nicks was
