I have been trying to figure this out for a long time. It makes no sense to me at all considering it's been over 10 years since the two teams have been in the same division and it's not like the 49ers were the only one who regularly beat up on the Saints in those days.

1987 really sucked, Saints lose 3 games that season,
one was a replacement game to Sean Payton, and end up as a wild card.

Why don't you ask Saints fans on a Saints Board

Because I'm not a Saints fan and I would be banned for trolling (trolling = not being a homer). I've been on the site 6 years. Posted on the Saints board one day and got banned. Haven't posted on it since.

91 was the worst. 49ers have to start their 3rd string QB (Bono) and we can still only manage a split with them. We barely beat them at home too.

basically what the Saints are doing to the Falcons now (ATL has a good, consistently playoff-bound team... the Saints are just better and beat them regularly)... that's what the 9ers did to the Saints in late-80s, early-90s... it was the 1st time the Saints had a darn good team (esp. the Dome Patrol D)... but SF was always just better w/ Montana, Rice et al... a lot of Saints fans still harbor that resentment... and will until their dying day... or at least until the Saints beat the 49ers in the playoffs

also as someone said above... the playoff loss in the 2011 season still stings heavily

Why limit this to the 49ers? Reading stuff here it seems like Saints fans hate everyone, that no other team has won a Super Bowl and that New Orleans is the only city of note in the country.

Tis an interesting world in which they live.

It's not just saints fans. They've probably been the second most hated team in the league across the board since the 80's, after the cowboys.

i still get a tingle in my spine when i think about Morten Andersen hitting a long FG to beat them 26-24 at Candlestick in 1987 ... it means THAT much to us !

Dear God THIS!!!

I will also add JOE.....frickING.....MONTANA!!!

Respect the hell out of the dude now. But watching him shred the Saints and then pull the ball down and trot out of bounds after a 12 yard gain untouched.

Since when did they change their name to the Louisiana Saints?

And given how anti-LSU that organization and a lot of their fans are I'm fricking happy as shite I didn't become a fan of that team.

exaggerating. I am a die hard fan of both and many are. the segment of the population in Louisiana that doesn't like the saints is the retards up north that cheer for the cowboys and aren't lsu fans.

They use to be in the same division when the 49ers ran shite. 49ers are also second to the cowboys with awful bandwagon fans.

In my experience, a lot of the Saints fan base in the city of New Orleans (not all obviously nor maybe even a majority but a very health number) are essentially displaced Tulane fans who hate LSU and anything non-NOLA or they are Ole Miss/Auburn/Alabama fans who hate LSU as well.

Benson has always been anti-LSU as he sees the Tigers as competition to his product. Then you have their coaches helping out Nick Saban going into the 2011 BCSCG. T-Bob even hinted that they felt there were Saints people spying on their practices leading up to that game.

Saints fans from the Northshore and other parts of south louisiana skew much heavier as dual LSU-Saints fans.

well you seem to be implying that i have some responsibility to root for a New Orleans team even though I didn't grow up there. How much sense does that make?

unless a state has multiple teams even though it is named after a city it is considered that state's team. you know this and you are just using that excuse to justify being a bandwagoner

It's not an excuse. When i was a kid New Orleans may has well have been on the moon.

and i freely admit that i was a bandwagoning 7 year old. What would you have me do, ditch them and bandwagon the Saints now?

Saints had an all time front seven right around the time 9ers were admist their run of Championships that caused legions of bandwagon fans (some of whom still bring the quality of this site down). They had our number and were the only thing standing in the saints way of winning multiple division titles and hosting playoff games.

The 9ers & Montana had their way with Saints for years.

I recall a Jerry Rice touchdown in the dome where he lost the ball before he crossed.

They gave it to him anyway.
