Erxleben is the answer.

Larry Burton should be included in conversation. 7th overall in 75... huge disappointment

Pretty sure Russell Erxleben is top of the list with Sully firmly in second.

Agree. The fact the Saints thought they were a deep enough team to take a punter/kicker with a mid first round draft pick makes this pick stand out. As bad as Sullivan was, he would have gone around that area of the draft.

No you are making too broad of a definition of “high

Larry Burton is a good one, how about Vaughn Dunbar, first round pick when they needed a RB played 3 years ran for 900 yards

Context is not semantics. If the “worst draft choice” in the history of a 57 year old franchise was a late 2nd rounder that would be amazing

Anyone who does not answer this does not know what they are talking about.

First round punter. Again, punter in the first round.

Punter.

11th overall selection.

Yeah, this is the answer, and it's so bad there really will never be a challenger.

For people who list Sullivan, or Knight, or guys like Molden or Jean-Baptiste: at least there was a thought process going on. Hey, we need a big defensive tackle or a cornerback. Those are at least positions that merit a pick that high (certainly 2nd rd picks).

A kicker or punter doesn't. Probably 99% of those guys are undrafted free agents, who sorta cherry-pick franchises that might need one; and franchises tend to have 2-3 on their call list to come back next camp. They are necessary but generic- you expect any kicker can make most kicks 50 yds and in, any punter to get about 40-45 per punt. It's now to the point that you groom guys with stronger legs, take the kicker who COULD make a 55 yd kick over the guy you KNOW will make everything inside 40 yds.

And what's even worse, the Saints even whiffed on this move. The one possible benefit of Erxleben was that he could kick and punt, thus saving you a roster spot; but he couldn't.

Just for giggles, I looked up the 1979 draft. Charles Alexander (RB LSU) went 12th, next pick. Kellen Winslow, Hall of Fame TE, went 13th.
Fun fact- the 49ers drafted Joe Montana in the 3rd, and Dwight Clark in the 10th rd that year.

You’re arguing about what constitutes a “high draft pick”. That’s semantics.

Also, any NFL GM will tell you that a 2nd round pick is a high and valuable draft choice. That’s why they won’t give them away without a high value in return.

Erxleben is out of the world bad.

One name not mentioned so far, we used the 21st overall pick on an all American running back of of Indiana.... Vaughn Dunbar. I remember him missing huge holes and instead running up the back of our offensive line. Guy had zero vision but was compared to Emmitt Smith :facepalm

The answer is Larry Burton, and honestly, its not close.

Maybe Shawn Knight is close. Sullivan 3rd.

Erxleben actually was a decent punter for a few years after Tommy Blanchard. Having him do the placekicking was a huge mistake.

Burton caught a total of 35 passes with 4 td’s in his career with the Saints.

The Saints took him with the 7th overall pick in the 1st round of the 1975 NFL draft.

There was a joke going around town when Erxleben was with the Saints that he had tried to shoot himself in the head and missed wide right. My sister came home from school one day and said "did y'all hear Erxleben tried to shoot himself". She believed it. I started laughing my arse off! lol

World class speed coupled with hands of stone. If he caught the ball, which was rare, he was gone.

Dunbar doesn’t belong in this conversation. He was a late first rounder, was an All-American and was sixth in the heisman running. He was our leading rusher his rookie year and came in 2nd in the offensive rookie of the year voting while splitting time with Ironhead and Hilliard. The next year he blew out his knee in the preseason and when he came back in 1994 they went with Mario Bates as the main running back and the next year they let Dunbar go to Jacksonville. I’d say it was more of an injury issue than a talent issue.
