i could see us jumping a couple spots for a guy like beckham if he's our guy and we feel like there is a serious chance he is in someone else's scope

The price you'd have to pay just to climb a few spots doesn't seem to worth it...especially for a WR in a draft that is one of the deepest at that position in years. Not saying it couldn't happen, because we all know Payton will do what he has to get a player he really wants. It just hasn't worked out for us too often.

Definitely would NOT move up in the 1st this year.. Too much depth and not many immediate NEEDS that would warrant the picks. Our draft day stud defenders have all come from sitting tight and/or finding the UDFA gems - Jordan, KV, Hicks, Gallette, etc.

Can't remember much good coming from trading up/into the first.. Ellis, Ingram, etc.

I think with the Saints having missed out on two second round picks that past few drafts, that we will stay put and look to add picks and not give them away.

But if we do trade up, I think it'll be no more than 5 spots if Dennard or OBJ are available.

Probably will have to give up our 3rd rounder to jump a few spots.

If Dennard is within reasonable striking distance you take him.

And I completely agree about our lost 2nd rounders, but with Dennard you're talking about a Seahawk-esque secondary. The signing of Byrd and the drafting of Dennard would instantly change the dynamic of our defense.

follow up-

What about sacrificing the 3rd Rd #91?

That could move ya up 6 spots. here's the scenario-

We're at pick #21 and Green Bay called to ask if we wanna move up.

There's been a run on WRs. Beckham is the highest rated left and your next WR in pegged as no more than late 2nd Rd.
-or-
A run on CBs, Gilbert, Dennard, Fuller, Verrett gone. Roby is the top rated on the board and your next CB on the board only gets 3rd Rd grades.

Pull the trigger in a situation like this?

What about fallers to #21 that you would jump up for? Ebron, Lewan, Mosley, or Barr worth making a move for?

In regards to trading up in say a later round: I hope it's for Cody Latimer,WR Indiana. I haven't heard much about him but recently watched some of his games and dude can ball. Idk how he is projected so late, anyone know more about him or agree that he can play??

I wouldn't be mad at all about giving up our third to move ahead of Philly and Kansas City as teams most likely looking for WRs if that were the case. I think if either Dennard or Gilbert are there that could be an option too. Otherwise I think we stand pat. We have two 5ths, we could use one to get back in third round if necessary

No, because if there's a run on one position of need then there will be a surplus at another. If we were just one player away from a full team, then I would be fine with this; however, we require a few upgrades, not just one. Plus this draft is so deep it would be silly to give up another potential starter for one guy that may not be much better than the one we would wind up getting if we stay put.

That is the crux tho... There could be one guy left that you rank substantially higher than the next. It can happen. It's happened (trading up) every year since Payton has been here except one.

Example-

Say Gilbert, Dennard, & Fuller are gone at #21. You've Xed off Verrett for size. Roby is the highest rated player left on your board. You rank him as a potential #1 CB that would be favored to start over the current guys. If you wait another round you only see project type CBs that will need time to develop. You count SD at #25 a sure taker of him. Even Cincy #24 & Cleveland #26 could take him. Green Bay sez #91+ #27 and you can take him at #21.

I'm not advocating such as much as pointing out from history that it should be no surprise if they would.

Obviously it is up to them but as was mentioned previously we have been on the short end of the young, cheap, talented contracts over the last 4 years. I'd prefer to have more guys who can contribute than reaching on a guy who is marginally better at best.
