Maybe it finally dawned on Sean that he has two, maybe three, years left with Brees playing at an above-average level and he can't squander it due in part to a sense of commitment to his guys.

He did the same thing to his close friend Gary Gibbs after 2008. Sean is a loyal guy (to a fault), but he also values his job.
Hopefully it works out for the Saints like it did back then.

I think this is part of the reason, but I think this also came because CSP realized he needed some new blood. The same guys weren't getting it done. It wasn't just the roster that needed to change, but the coaching staff too.
