QB - Want a QB to potentially take over for Brees. Not a need.
Brees, Daniel, McCown, Grayson(Practice Squad stash)

RB - Need a #2 RB behind Ingram.
Ingram, Lasco, Cadet, Murphy

FB - Not a want or need.
Kuhn

WR - Want 1 legit guy. We basically have 4 guys. Not a need.
Thomas, Snead, Ginn, Coleman, Tommylee Lewis, Lampman, Williams-Lambert, Corey Fuller, Rashad Lawrence

TE - Want to upgrade. We have 3 decent options & Phillips is decent option as a blocking TE. Not a need.
Fleener, Hooman, Hill, John Phillips, Garrett Griffin, Jake Stoneburner

OL - Need a backup RT/Striefs replacement via F.A.(1 year cheap stopgap...hopefully not Hills, b/c he REALLY sucked last year) or draft(use about a 3rd rounder on Striefs replacement). Left side of the line & center are fine. Backup RG is questionable, but we should be able to get by with Turner or Fullington...maybe even re-sign Jahri. I don't think the staff wants to have Peat or Kelemete on the right side.
Armstead, Unger, Warford, Peat, Strief, Kelemete, Landon Turner, John Fullington, Jack Allen(Practice Squad stash)
F.A. - Jahri Evans, Hills

DT - Not a want or need.
Fairley, Rankins, Davison, Onyemata, Ashaad Mabry, Justin Zimmer

DE - Desperately need a starter via the draft. I take back saying that we might want to draft 2 DE's...I'm ok with our depth & we don't need to overload the position.
Jordan, Kikaha, Tapp, Gwachum, Okafor, Mitchell Loewen, DJ Pettway, Royce LaFrance
F.A. - Kruger

LB - Want to add a starter in the top 2 rounds of the draft(starting to like Reddick). No point in drafting for depth...we have plenty of that & might even re-sign Mauti. Not a need, but it's borderline imo.
Ellerbe, Robertson, Klein, Stupar, Anthony, Te'o, Travis Feeney, Adam Bighill
F.A. - Mauti, Sam Barrington, Jason Trusnik

CB - Need to draft a potential starter in the top 2 rounds. No need to draft for depth...we're ok there. Not a need at all if we trade for Butler.
Breaux, PJ Williams, Sterling Moore, Crawley, Swann, DeVante Harris(Practice Squad stash), Taveze Calhoun, Anthony Gaitor, Jimmy Pruitt, Forrest Hightower
F.A. - Webb, Kyle Wilson

S - This is probably the most complicated position(LB being 2nd most complicated). Vaccaro is on the last year of his contract, Bell is a question mark as of right now, & Bush is a stopgap guy for 1...maybe 2 years at best. There is no guarantee that we will have legit guys here next year. That's why I think it's a need & should be addressed no later than the 3rd round. We're fortunate that safety is deep in this draft.

Vaccaro, Bell, Rafael Bush, Erik Harris, Banjo, Keo, Robenson Therezie
F.A. - Roman Harper, Jamarca Sanford

K - Not a want or need.
Lutz

P - Not a want or need.
Morstead

LS - Whatever. They'll figure it out.
Jesse Schmitt
F.A. - Justin Drescher

Needs - Starting DE, Starting CB, #2 RB, Safety that can cover, & Backup RT/Replacement for Strief

Wants - Starting LB(borderline need...most people think it's more of a problem than I do, so I guess you can consider it a need if you want to), Potential QB to replace Brees, 1 more legit WR, Upgrade the TE position(we would have to cut Hooman or Hill for this to happen).

For pick #11...as of now, my top 4 targets would be Hooker, Lattimore, Barnett, & Reddick. Highly unlikely that all 4 will be gone. That or trade down.

Let me know if you think I missed something. 25 days until the draft...just trying to get some discussion going considering not much is going on besides mock drafts at this point.

Well done

I would only add LB'er as a need. Kikaha(you need to add) Ellerbe and Te'o are injury question marks. The last impact LB'er we had was Vilma and that worked out ok

And your right about needing a legit 2nd RB with Tim gone. If not for Lasco's injury we might have seen enough to make this a want and not a need.

If our first three picks are DE LB'er and CB I would be very pleased.

Just want to say safety isn't a need this year, as much as LB isn't.

You definitely want to take one if a good one is there at your pick, but for this year we have 3 starting caliber safeties.

But I would perhaps recategorize them the way Payton does and put them in Musts, Needs, and Wants.

Musts:

Rush End- Kikaha is coming off a major injury and switching positions (after missing a whole year). Okafor only had one good (not great) year. Tapp is a good rotational guy but not someone to rely on as a consistent pass rusher.

CB- Moore is a legit number 2. Behind him we have a bunch of young guys coming off of injuries. Breaux was looking legit, but after a leg injury you never know how he'll come back. Williams had a severe concussion.

Needs:

HB- Behind Ingram we have an unproven Lasco, Murphy, and Cadet who has 25 career carries in 5 years (still a joke to call him a running back).

Wants:

QB- We'll need a long term solution behind Brees as he is getting up in age, told Payton he might play another 2-4 years, is in his final contract year, and said he will test FA after this year. Daniel and McCown are in the last year of their contracts.

WR- If we get the chance to draft a young speedster we should consider it. Ginn is no spring chicken and Thomas, Snead, and Coleman are not burners.

OT- We'll need a replacement for Strief sooner than later and also need some depth on the right side behind Warford and Strief.

LB- A true impact LB (super cover guy, tackling machine (with tackles for a loss not 10 yards down field), or preferably an all in one package). We're overdue for another.

S- Vaccaro on his last year, Bush maybe on a one year (did they release his details?), and Bell still developing. I like our depth this year, but this is a deep safety class and will give us options if Vaccaro tests FA and goes elsewhere.

Won't happen. Payton absolutely loves that dude and he's a leader and cares about the team. He's a great player and will continue to be a Saint for a long time IMO.

I'm not saying it will happen, but just like Brees he will be a FA and you never know what happens in FA.

I think both want to stay and Payton loves both, but some other team could "love" them with a lot more money.

Best to have someone in hand (even as a third safety if Bush leaves) then be left holding your dick.

Plus Vaccaro is more of a hybrid player than true safety. Get a roamer in the back in as an upgrade to Bush.

I think a TE is slightly a bigger need for our future which probably doesn't include any on roster past 1 or 2 years

I think Fleener had a better year than most give him credit for.

Yes he struggled at the beginning of the year but he started coming on at the end.

If you want to draft a blocking TE or an upgrade to Fleener sure, but it definitely is not a must or need.

But if we are going to want to upgrade almost everyone the list gets kind of pointless.

Even if Fleener does ok, it's still going to be a cap decision at some point and that assumes his inconcistencies disappear

You're also assuming about how hooman comes back this year

Hooman is under contractn unless you mean come back from injury.

It's not worth looking at this year unless the grade is higher than the pick.

Those picks should be going to defense.

Next year look at TE all you want.

but he started coming on at the end.

When was this? His last four games were awful. His best game was 3 catches for 38 yards on 8 targets. 1 TD in the last 11 games.

Must have missed this somehow. Please explain source.

I'll try to find the link but it was right after the season Brees said he doesn't know how much longer he can do this (referring to having losing seasons) and said he plans on playing out his contract (thus testing FA).

Yeah I didn't phrase that right at all. His first 3 out of 4 games were bad (one great game though) and where most of his drops came from iirc. It set a bad precedent. He then started playing more consistent but you are right he did fade on the last four.

Faie enough. I pretty much agree. Need a RT once Strief retires, a #2 RB, a starting DE, CB, and maybe LB and S for depth.
