I know the downvotes are coming so just bear with me for a minute or 2.

Crawley did pretty well last year for a #2 cb. He limited the big plays on him, was one of the better red zone corners in the league, and wasn't a huge liability in coverage throughout the year. The regression we've seen in him this season seems to me is mostly due to us running much more zone and having less safety help. Want to make it clear that I am not saying he's some all pro shut down corner by any means but i think this deep zone scheme makes him look much worse than he really is simply bc he's just a man coverage corner. I say that to lead to this final point. This defense needs to move Crawley to slot duties and put in more man coverage to complement the move and also for PJ to never see the field unless someone is mortally wounded. Alright that's all I got down vote away boys

PJ to never see the field

To play a double Devils Advocate, ESPN put up a stat that on the 3 throws against Williams on the first drive, the likelihood of completion, with his coverage was 45%. He was right there with Thielen and Diggs and didn’t get completely burned. The PI call was borderline because I thought that the ball was uncatchable. Then he forces and fumble and gets the pick 6. Lets see if he uses that second half as a springboard for the rest of the season.

I dont think it’s that unpopular cause I agree with you. I think he got the short end of the stick with all this. Dennis Allens soft zone sceme doesnt do him any favors. Also, there isnt a DB on our team, including Lattimore, that hasnt been burned 5+ times this year.

I Dont think he is bad at all. I wouldnt be surprised if he had success on a different team.

He doesnt fit what they are trying to do.
You let a guy like crawley jam and press.

on all the catches and busts hes had, I have not see a Safety over there to help him.

You dont put him on speedy recievers, You move him around like Belicheck did Brandon Browner.

I thought he was pretty good last year, but he seemed to have fallen off a cliff this season. I don't know if he was playing over his head last year, or if he was under performing this year, but its been a rough few weeks. A fully healthy CB core with him as the 4th guy behind Lattimore, Apple, and PRob is a pretty strong group.

He has been the victim of the system this year. Just like PJ Williams was last night.

This became apparent to me last week against Baltimore. What kind of moron would put fast & shifty Lattimore on Michael Crabtree, but put slower, bigger and more physical Crawley on John Brown? John Brown is below average at everything except running fast and being kind of shifty. He's Brandin Cooks lite. It would have made a lot more sense to let Crawley face Crabtree and let Lattimore take care of Brown. But that wasn't the case and Crawley got torched by a guy who is a lot faster and shiftier.

If you think back, this has kind of been the case all season. Why would you put Crawley in coverage against DeSean Jackson?

Now last night ... why was PJ Williams EVER facing Adam Thielen or Stefon Diggs? You would think that Lattimore would be on one of those two 100% of the time, and Apple would be on the other. But nope. There were multiple times last night where Shon was in coverage against guys like Treadwell and Robinson, despite Thielen and Diggs being on the field.

I'm not sure why we call coverages this way. My guess is that it's because Lattimore cannot play the slot well (?), and so they just let them play sides or specific spots in certain calls always. The problem is that this gives the opponents a lot of mismatches... and this is where our defensive problems have come from all season.

So, long story short, yes I agree with you OP. I think Crawley is good enough to hang in coverage against 2s and 3s who aren't lightning fast, or 1s who are physical/slower.

Crawley runs a 4.43 in the 40, he isn’t exactly slow, now his hips might be an issue

He would be better if we had bad arse safeties... Of course so would everyone else. Kinda sucks for him because we do not have bad arse safeties.

Sorry, yes, that is more of what I mean. I mean, I think his game speed is definitely not 4.43 still. But he is stiff and not very shifty. A guy like Michael Crabtree is a great matchup for Crawley. He plays great when he can just fistfight with guys and they aren't making cuts all over the place

That’s a good point, some guys lose a lot of speed when the pads are on. And some don’t lose any speed...... Kamara

Another example is the long touchdown late in the Browns game where Callaway burnt him deep. He's been getting matched up with faster WR's and the safety over the top is either not there or out of position.

I won't complain because we won, but this is an issue.

If hes active next week and he's on someone like cooks instead of woods or Reynolds, Dennis Allen needs to be canned.

Sometimes I think it's about not being beat in multiple places vs just being beat in one.

Yep, good example. Woods and Reynolds are both more Crawley's speed, and I think with occasional safety help (especially with Woods) he would be fine in coverage against either one. He might give some shorter passes up, but I would rather that than a speed guy burning him.

I think Shon should shadow Cooks honestly. He is the only CB we have who can keep up with him. But if the rest of the year is any indication (Jackson, Brown) that won't happen and we will for sure see Cooks open deep a few times.

No down vote here, but I don't really care about last year.

I think he's been awful this season. Regardless of reasoning.. but maybe you are onto something.. I believe we were much less of a liability without him this Sunday.. against some very talented receivers.

I hope you are correct though.
