Prior to the 2009-2010 season we all wondered what it exactly took to win a Super Bowl. What would that feeling feel like to us? Would it really feel that magical? Is it possible to feel that jubilant and untouchable? For many it was a wild dream we never thought would become a reality in our lifetimes no matter our age. Well, that season it happened. And every season prior to that one we fought like hell always to no avail in reaching the big game. As confetti poured down on SunLife stadium that February night we finally realized what it meant and felt like to be a Super Bowl champion. Since that magical season we’ve failed to get back to the big game (2011-2012 was our best chance to get back since). As the years pass I go from being a young kid being broken hearted that his team failed to reach the playoffs to look forward to next season to an adult that knows the reality no matter how good or bad your season is whether that’s 12-4 or 6-10, there can only be one winner in the end. Pre 2009 8-8 was great; post 2009 and if it isn’t 10 or more wins and a championship game appearance the season is a failure. The ultimate goal for every team is to be hoisting that Lombardi trophy at seasons end. Anything short of that and it’s a disappointment. I’m not that naïve to believe the Saints should win it every season; that just isn’t possible. It’s not even enough to be “In the hunt”, we have to be a number one or two seed during the season. That’s what 2009 taught us, is that we can have a winner here, we’ve been there, we can do it again and we will do it again….when is anybody’s guess. See, that’s what winning a Super Bowl can do; it can give you that invincibility that you’re always going to be there but it can also be a cruel indicator that things don’t always last.

Our current state makes 2011 hurt that much worse. That team was amazing to watch and I am not sure how long it will take before we become that good again. They were better than the eventual SB Champs that year. A SB showdown with Brady would have been an amazing thing to watch...with a win Drew would have beat both QB's of his generation in the SB. Quite a thing to have listed on your resume.

I'll to my grave with 2011 haunting me.

The 2011 Saints were the greatest Saints team ever assembled, I don't care what anybody says.

Success leads to cruel expectations.

We got one. It was the most amazing this I ever experienced as a sports fan. Nothing will ever replace or come close to rivaling that first championship. If we suck for awhile before climbing the mountain again so be it...there is a certain enjoyment in "wait till next year" as well.

I'm just happy we won a Super Bowl. If we hadn't, this 0-2 would seem more monumental.

0-2 sucks, but we've got a great QB and a great coach to build from. Solid foundation if you ask me.

Agreed. It's fun to watch the team and the prospects and the rebuilding. It's a part of it.

That 9'ers game was an emotional roller coaster. If we would have beat them we would have plowed through the Giants at home for the NFC championship. Man that hurt

I'm not one to dwell in the past but damn... it still stings.

We got extremely spoiled in 2011. Those two teams were arguably the best teams in Saints and LSU history. They went a combined 27-4 that year. In a very, very small way, it could be better that they didn't both achieve championships. I would have hated to have to tell my future kids that they are the second best thing to ever happen to me after the 2011 football season.

Not that it's on the same level of LSU competing for a nat'l championship and the Saints breaking records left and right/looking like a clear SB favorite, but 2011 was also the year that UL took a big step forward to become a bowl team (and win a bowl) for the first time in like 50 years. LA Tech also made a bowl that season, although they lost.

My buddy and I still talk about how in 2011, Louisiana was probably king of the football world.

...and it all came crashing down so quickly.

It would make a great 30 for 30...

Seriously someone explain to me why they think Payton is still a great Coach.

Do you think that whatever made him a good coach just vanished out of his brain?

He won a Super Bowl as head coach of the New Orleans Saints.

He completed a virtually impossible task.

You know a lot of people blame Roger Goodell for our decline. But we have had nothing but HORRIBLE fortune since 2009.

Horrible personnel decisions
Salary cap Hell
Historically bad drafts
Sean Payton turning into a rock star and forgetting how to coach
Benson family soap opera
Two of the most painfully historic playoff losses in all of NFL history
Brees' slow decline from Pro Bowl QB to television personality/entrepeneur

And you know what? As a fan, one and only one Lombardi Trophy will ALWAYS be worth it.
