I think, like most of us, they thought we had a pretty complete team and Graham would be a long term piece

Yeah to be fair we were all stoked at the beginning of last year. It's the most excited I've been since the 2011 season - maybe even the 2010 season after the Super Bowl.
The injuries and drama and weird public rift between Payton and Ryan made us seem like we were out of control. That ridiculous fake punt that killed our comeback chance at Dallas (and Payton's idiotic explanation for why he called it) was definitely the low point of the season (and Payton's career with the Saints) for me. Jimmy playing like a baby back bitch at the end of the season was surreal as well.

The Saints have begun to leak reports that Galette was a bad teammate and negative influence in the locker room, and I don’t doubt that he was a problem, but I’m very skeptical that those issues had a meaningful part in this decision. New Orleans had been around Galette for five years, during which it gave him two contract extensions, before suddenly deciding that he was a locker-room cancer. (It’s unclear if they knew about the 2013 incident before last week.) Galette’s teammates even voted him to be one of the team’s captains.
This passage tells me Barnwell's somewhat out of his depth in this situation.

Yea, he might be a moron.

Had they let Cam & Junior play out their contracts (and Junior doesn't get in trouble), then this writer probably would have written an article about how poorly ML managed the FAs and allowed some of our top young talent get to the end of their contracts and/or hit the market.
People forget too that if Kikaha can turn into a pass rushing specialist for us on a rookie deal, by getting rid of Galette, if Hicks has a strong season, they can afford to resign him long-term as well. I'd much rather, Kikaha, Cameron and Hicks long term then overpaying for a team cancer.

I think it is also funny how much people are hating on this team, when talent wasn't their issue really last year. It was lack of leadership and unfortunately injuries.
Bad apples can destroy even the most talented team.
The defense struggled mightily, and as great as Lofton was at racking up tackles, he wasn't the type of leader this team needed, and that void along with Galette poisoning the well per se was the defense's downfall.
Brees became to reliant on Jimmy on offense and that truly hurt the flow of the team along with a weakness at center and guard.
I am not saying this is a perfect team now, but they don't have a ton of long term contracts into players past their prime. Everyone hated on Colston, yet despite a down year that would be considered a very solid year for almost any other WR, he ended up with the 2nd highest YPC of his career and over 900 yards receiving. The other thing is he played hurt a large chunk of last season.
Let's wait and see what happens before hating on Loomis completely and the FO.

If the Saints traded (or cut, although that would be unlikely) Brees during the 2016 offseason, they would save $20 million on their cap. It’s their quickest way to financial freedom. It would be professional suicide for Loomis to deal his star quarterback and admit failure, but if the Saints produce another disappointing season this year, it probably won’t be Loomis’s decision to make. A new general manager could spin the move as the beginning of a rebuild forced by the missteps of the old regime while giving Brees a chance to compete elsewhere before he retires.
The author clearly doesn't understand how the Saints' hierarchy works.

Yeah it's shockingly out of touch from a dedicated NFL writer. Maybe Zach Lowe wrote this.

I love the part about junior not being a locker room issue.
We didn't cut him to save cap space...

Entire article seemed like filler for Barnwell to write a bleacher report like list of "teams Brees could end up" while not stooping to bleacher report level.
Nailed it.

It's shocking that Barnwell has this job with Grantland. He's just not in the same league as guys like Lowe and Jonah Keri.

People are sleeping on stephone anthony too
A young 3 down MLB that's the total package is what the saints have needed for years.
Potential solid depth/potential starters in Tull/Davidson as well.

Is the window of the era closing?
Yes.
Do we have no chance of winning another SB before Drew retires?
No.
This article is spun negatively, but I wouldn't expect much more from Barnwell. He has NEVER been keen on the Loomis, Payton, and the Saints.
