re: The case for trading up: 9 picks, only 5 or 6 drafted players will be useful...

Are we putting Wilson and Gregory in the same sentence?
Only one person is.
I'm not sure why I'm even arguing about it. I don't particularly care for any of the draft's top DE/OLB prospects outside of Beasley and Fowler, and I don't think that either is worth moving up for. Amari Cooper is the only player I'd be OK with trading a 2nd/3rd to move up for.

There's a lot more to football than athleticism.
You don't say? Like work ethic right? How about not being fundamentally sound & being able to play using leverage. All of that is in the breakdowns too. Both players were/are being labeled as being raw talents.

Look man, you seem like a really leveled headed, logical person. You really cannot logically look at this comparison & not see the similarities here.

Yet one is a top 7 pick and one was what a 4th round pick or some crap. Might as well drop a mingo comparison that may suit better

That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me. My grandfather's last words were calling me a count. But there's a reason why Gregory is considered a first round pick while Tez was a 3rd. And, again, I don't particularly like Gregory, and I hope that he is drafted in the top 12. Honestly, I don't think that outside pass rush is a big issue, interior rush is. That's why I'd love Williams or Shelton.

Sorry to trash your smoking/deep throat buddy. Wilson was a 3rd round pick. #72 overall. You want to know who was also a 3rd rounder?

Gregory is benefitting from playing at a perennial top 25 program in Nebraska while Wilson came from a shite program like Illinois.

Khalil Mack came from fricking Buffalo and went in the top 5. I'm not going to pretend to be some super expert on CFB, but Gregory is unanimously considered to be a first round talent. That would be the case no matter where he went to school.

Mack didn't have questions surrounding his work ethic, motor & drug issues. He had the production & physical measurables to be a high draft pick even though he came from a smaller school.

Gregory is not as an unanimous 1st round pick as he first was with his issues coming out. There have been some mocks that have him completely falling out of the 1st round. Don't believe everything you hear or see on TV all the time.

Randy Gregory 6'5
Martez Wilson 6'4
Pat Swilling 6'3
Cie Grant 6'0
Different body type, different linebacker position, does not belong in this conversation

No one disagrees with his drug issues making him iffy. People don't agree with your Tez comparison that was purely based on physical similarities.

Aldon Smith
Understood the concept of playing with leverage. He also made better use of his hands & long arms to keep lineman off him.
quote:
Smith has a chance to turn into a disruptive starting NFL 4-3 end if he can improve his strength and tenacity and become more stout against the run. He's got so much potential. He's a fluid, natural pass rusher who overcomes lack of excellent get-off with terrific hand usage, elite lateral-mobility, very good closing speed, and a strong desire to get to the quarterback. Provides some value maintaining outside contain, pursuing from the backside, and making plays outside of the box, but could struggle a bit against the downhill running game. Smith has steadily climbed his way into the first round.

Smith was also 263 lbs. Gregory is 235 lbs. Marques Colston is 6'4 225. Gregory is an inch taller than Colston & only weighs 10 more lbs.

There is a technique comparison as well. Both players play high in their stance. It makes them easier to block. It won't show up in college where they could get away with it because of their athleticism. It will be a different story in the pros.

I didn't realize that the Dolphins only gave up a second rounder to move up from 12 to 3 in order to snag Dion Jordan. Wish we could have done that last year to move up a little farther, instead of wasting a second round pick on SJB.
I think that year a lot of trades had low value. Looking at it, it was a pretty crappy draft in terms of top tier players and even average ones

Saw, but didn't put much weight into it. Jerry Jones was #1 on that list.......
