Not worth our pick at 11
I agree. I think there are 7 elite players in this draft, then a big list of about 30 or so players who are similar in talent and potential. Since the Saints don't like to trade back, I think they're going to pick a DE at #11. They've just never been good at manipulating the draft to get players and extra picks. I remember in 1974 when John North was the coach of the Saints. The Saints beat writer wrote a few years after the 1974 draft that the way we ended up with Rick Middleton in round 1 was that North said to the scouting dept, "We need a OLB. Who is the highest rated OLB on the board?" They told him it was Rick Middleton of Ohio St, but that he wasn't worth the 13th overall pick in the draft. North chose him anyway, and of course Middleton faded into obscurity. Still on the board were future HOF's Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, Randy Gradishar, and Dave Casper.

I think Charlton is going to settle in eventually as a 290 lb strongside DE who will be good against the run and a decent pass rusher. So while he may become an above average pro, he's not what the Saints need opposite Cam Jordan.

He's actually a much better pass rusher than he is a run defender. Defending the run is actually his weakness

Sounds like they have the guys they like. If they are there at their projected spots, they will go for it. Working out the same position at different spots in the draft definitely means it is where we are headed.

The more I see of him, the more I don't mind the pick. He definitely has a knack for blowing up run plays. This draft and our position and needs has made this a very unstressful draft. There's a bunch of guys that will be there at 11 that I'm fine with.

the saints are doing things this year we aren't used to seeing them do, smart FA signings with smart contracts, smart trade deals

so our past history of the guys they meet with not really meaning anything about who they draft might also be different this year.

they might actually be meeting with guys they are genuinely interested in, instead of using interviews as a tool to mislead other teams as to who we "really" want as they have done in past years

These DE's are weak at best. We should forget about need and draft BPA.

Honestly, taking a guy like McCaffrey would add more to the W column than reaching on an unproven DE with decent athleticism at the 11th pick of the draft. We have the 11th pick of the draft, get a fricking stud.

I think Soloman Thomas is the only real stud DE in this draft but he probably won't be there for the Saints unless something crazy happens. Barnett is good but do you pick him if there are guys like Jamal Adams or Malik Hooker on the board? Hard decision for me. Even offensive studs like Fournette, Mike Williams, or Corey Davis would be hard to pass up in my opinion.

I'm projecting what he will become when he gains about 15 pounds and a few years of age. Beefing up will make him better against the run, but will diminish his pass rushing ability a bit. But I still think he can be above average on both. Just not elite on either.

Somehow I hope Solomon Thomas drops to 11. If he is not there the smart move is trade back cause this is a year where if u don't get one of the two or three top guys u trade back and get ur pick of the second tier guys. Jordan Willis would be great at 32 and there are a couple more we could grab in round two or three.
Also like Marlon Humphrey at cb

Guys like JPP weighed in around 270 at the combine and have hovered around that while remaining effective throughout their career.

Chandler Jones is another guy that was heavy coming in - and slow - but have kept extra weight off and has been a very good player.

I think you pick the guy that you think will be the best player that will help your team win the most.

If that's an Offensive player, so be it.

I think it's hard to assume what will happen. I've watched enough drafts to know that things happen that nobody can predict. Nobody knows for certain what teams will do which makes all of these predraft mocks almost worthless.

Some examples I can recall off the top of my head would be the fall of Brady Quinn in whatever year draft that was. Almost every "expert" had him going top 10. Then there's Aaron Rodgers falling all the way to the Packers.
