Don't underestimate how good we are at stopping the run. The defense can be very good if we can get pressure on the QB. Hopefully Cam Jordan, Kikaha, Edebali, and Tull can get to the QB.

I like Hawthorne against the run and Ellerbe against the pass.
I bet they use Humber in coverage a lot.

That didn't work out too well last year. Hopefully he's improved since then. He did have a couple of really good games last year, but he also had a few bad ones as well.

I haven't really seen a whole lot from Edebali thus far. He has like one pass rush move at this point, and teams just push him up the field basically.

Just pulled up his PFF page for the preseason. He did better against Houston.

I don't know man, I can't help but be excited for the season regardless of the injuries and lack of whatever in the preseason. I trust our coaching staff, and Drew looks sharp....I think we'll be competitive (ir)regardless.

eta: We have a number of new players so I expect some growing pains or whatever, but I suspect as we get healthy and more experience, we'll get better as the season rolls along.

Our run defense has been very good too.

I don't have any numbers to back this up, but our run defense against the Texans' first team seemed very average. It seemed like our D-Line was getting blown 2 yards back every play.

They had a couple of runs where they got away with blatant holding. The team has registered 2.4 ypc for the entire preseason.

These are stats for the preseason. You can't take a whole lot from them because it's a lot of people playing that won't be on the team or play much at all, but here it is none the less.

Texans can run on anyone with their scheme. I was more talking about overall. We'll still have some games where we give up yards, but we were giving to 6+ YPC in some games.

Against the Texans, we have up 2.4 YPC on the first drive. Held them to no gain 2x.

While Hoyer was in, we held the Texans to 3.1 ypc

Our run defense has been very good too. The one game this preseason where we saw an extended look at the first string defense was against the Patriots, and Jordan, Hicks and Kikaha were disruptive. The Pats have a better o-line than the Cardinals at this point, so that makes me hopeful. Things might get ugly when we have to play Dallas.

This was not my takeaway at all. Yes, they had some good series against the Pats, but other than that the run D has been horrible.

Feel free to (hopefully) link me to this post after 4 games so I can see I was wrong.

Look at the screen shot of the run defense from PFF, and also the ypc.

Just looked it up. It's 2.4 ypc, the lowest of any team this preseason.

Thanks, man.

That is much better than I thought and I hope this is a precursor to the regular season.

More than anything else, I felt run D was what killed us last year.

It definitely did.

We could be an average, bend but don't break defense.

That'll win us the division, IMO.

Well I just looked at the stats... in the Ravens game where I think everyone agreed it looked like the defense got mauled, we gave up 105 yards the ground (not great) but only 2.7 YPC (pretty good)

In both the Patriots and Texans games it was 80 yards and 2.3 YPC which is pretty great.

Hardly a disaster, IMO

If the offense is what I think it's going to be it very well could.
