But now, according to NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein, Ray's injury is enough of a concern for teams that he may need surgery that would put him out for five months, depending on the doctor's recommendation of the team that ends up drafting him. Zierlein speculated that the injury could potentially drop Ray out of the first round.

Almost everyone expected him to go top 15. This could take another EDGE guy off the board for us and force another team to take Gregory before us, leaving us with not a lot to choose from.

While that sucks for him personally, and that he likely won't go top 12, hopefully that takes him off our board at 13.

Now the question becomes, do you take that guy at 31 (maybe trade back to top of 2nd) or 44 if he's there?

It all depends on what your medical team thinks.

At 31, yeah I think so. I could see a Danny Shelton/Shane Ray first two picks as a homerun if everything checks out medically in the long run.

Toe injuries are a bitch though. They seem to never go away.

Good question. I wouldn't be as upset as I would be if we took him at 13, but I still have the same concerns with him as a player at 31/44 as I do at 13. However, it's hard to pass up that value in the last 1st/2nd.

I believe it was Patrick Willis (LB/49ers) who dealt with a toe problems dating back to his college days at Ole Miss. He constantly played in pain and It was the reason he finally hung up the cleats.

Bingo. Good point and reference.

Ugh, another team will have to consider Gregory. Best outside rusher in the draft, but considering the stance of rebuilding the locker room, character, etc., not sure he is Mickey's choice anyway. If gone, no decision needed & Dupree should be available at 13. Not bad at all.

Hoping the Stanford OT falls to 31 & the UCF WR is available in the 2nd.

Would be a good start, but not convinced we keep the #31.

If he can produce at OLB/Edge as well as Willis had as a MLB, I'll take him for 8 seasons

Absolutely, but that's a big "if". Ray isn't good as Willis was...even without a toe problem.
