Again, I'm not surprised that it's taking this long NOW. It should have been done years ago to prevent it from getting to this point.

The Saints lost any leverage they may have had by letting Drew play out the contract.

We would have signed him for WAAAAAAY less money two years ago while he still had 2 years left on a deal than we will this week.

Brees now has no reason to negotiate really. Two years ago, all he would have been looking for was a reasonable bump from his current deal.

Now, we have nothing holding him. He can basically ask for whatever he wants because if we won't pay him, someone else will.

We have NO leverage.

It's the same reason there is ZERO chance we keep Nicks if we don't have the tag available to keep him.

i completely understand the frustration. how could we not be frustrated by the best Saints player in history to be dicked around.

however, doesnt it seem like something else is going on behind the scenes? i mean they extended paytons contract very easily, admist the dallas rumors.

Remember we got compensated for Reggie Bush when it was known he was gone anyway. This FO is light years above 92.63% of the rest of the league. This FO has never had free agents of this caliber to be let go of before.

Exactly why we will be tagging nicks right after they sign Brees on Sunday.

Kafka is just jealous of the meme skills. If you doesn't watch himself stealing the sticky meme schtick his threads are gonna get Caged big time in retaliation.

do you honestly think loomis is unaware of the importance of keeping these 2 players? hes just trying to solve the puzzle right now.

I question his desire to resign Nicks at 10 mill plus a year.

i have doubt of putting so much money into guards as well. but part of the reason brees can be so great is because of his ability to step up into the pocket. say we resign brees, but the line crumbles. what have we solved?

Totally agree.

Everyone who talks about putting too much money into guards doesn't realize the importance of the guards in our offense.

I'd argue they are much more valuable than our tackles, and teams never hesitate to shell out big bucks for bookend tackles.

I agree with all that but Saints will not outbid the NFL for Nicks. And we let Goodwin walk (who's in the middle) walk over a lot less last year.

I assume by letting Brees play out his contract it has allowed the Saints more cap room over these past few years. I'm sure the FO and Brees knew that an 80-90 million dollar contract would have prevented them from resigning key players. i.e. Evans, Moore, Pierre, Harper ect.

At that time of those signings they were top priorities and they managed to get them done. I know for a fact they will make the best decisions for this team and I'm not gonna freak out until they have given me a reason too.

This. If we've got Brees behind an amazing oline the rest of our offense could be the 7 dwarfs and it'd be the best in the NFL.

Life is a negotiation. Brees has been saying he's confident it will happen to make the Saints look bad if they don't give him a deal. That puts pressure on them to meet his price. All of these leaks about the tag put pressure on Brees, maybe he'd give up a million or 2 per year to get the security of a long term deal now and keeping Nicks. They are playing a game of chicken and we won't know how it will end until someone or no one blinks. Yes he might get tagged but one or both sides could cave and come to an agreement.

... this is interesting to watch pan out from an outsiders perspective. I'll get put on blast here but this is quickly becoming a PR/Exec management blunder of all blunders.

If they have to use the franchise tag on Brees, wow, and I were a Saints fan - I'd be calling for exec's heads to roll.

Problem is Drew is still right.

He deserves to be the highest paid player in the league if that's what he's asking.

It's not unreasonable because he's that valuable. If the Saints aren't willing to pay, that's their choice, but Drew isn't doing anything wrong.

Saints fricked up by letting it get to this point, and now they will either have to pay a king's ransom, or tag him and lose Nicks and be right back in the same position next year.
