Call it the sophomore shuffle.
The New Orleans Saints might wind up moving each of their top three picks from the 2015 draft to new positions this season.
They have already announced plans to move their most successful rookie -- first-round draft choice Stephone Anthony -- from middle linebacker to strongside linebacker. And Thursday, I wrote about how the Saints will consider moving offensive tackle Andrus Peat into more of a full-time guard role.
It also appears more likely that outside linebacker Hau'oli Kikaha will play more of a full-time defensive-end role after the Saints failed to add at that spot in free agency or the draft.

Before you go worrying about the Saints messing up a good thing with Anthony and Kikaha, consider that the position switches should benefit both linebackers, who might have been asked to take on too much last season.
Anthony had a very good rookie campaign, starting all 16 games as the quarterback of the Saints’ defense and ranking 20th in the NFL with 112 tackles. But coach Sean Payton suggested earlier this offseason that the Saints were looking to take the signal-calling part of the job off Anthony's plate, which is why they signed veteran free agent James Laurinaitis.
Now the 6-foot-2, 245-pound Anthony can concentrate more on using his impressive combination of power and athleticism. Saints linebackers coach Joe Vitt said before the draft that Anthony could be the first true 4-3 Sam linebacker for New Orleans since Scott Fujita.
Kikaha, meanwhile, had a terrific start as a playmaking edge rusher for the Saints last year, with four sacks and three forced fumbles in the first six weeks. But his performance dropped off after he began dealing with a nagging ankle injury. And he never looked fully comfortable when the Saints asked him to drop back in coverage.
The 6-3, 246-pound Kikaha was a full-time defensive end at Washington, where he racked up a whopping 19 sacks as a senior. He is a bit small to play an every-down DE role in the Saints’ 4-3 defense. But since they play nickel defense about 75 percent of the time, we could see Kikaha playing the Jack edge-rusher role on most of those nickel snaps.
Payton said earlier this offseason that Kikaha will likely play more at Jack. And it seems like a given now that the Saints didn’t add any new edge rushers in free agency or the draft.
For that reason, Kikaha might emerge as one of the most important players on New Orleans’ entire roster this season.

If Peat moving to G means less of Lelito or Kelemete, I'm perfectly fine with this.

wait I thought he was a disappointment, which is it?

Peat should stay at tackle. The other two changes are for the better.

Well played. K-9 owes you a jelly-baby.
Affirmative, Master!

This is where people criticize a 21 y/o Peat's "poor" play at G in a small sample size
HE CANT PLAY GUARD ABHHH!!!

There is no denying he looked much better at T than at G
Doesn't mean he can't play well at G

Nice so we used the 13th pick on a mediocre at best Gaurd. I do agree he looked better at tackle. Just don't see another option than a move to gaurd.

Is this accurate, I thought he was a 3-4 OLB in college? I think he could be successful as a pass rusher with his hand in the dirt or standing up, but just curious about his position in college

People like yourself don't realize the what it's like to transition from college to professional. Especially on a player that got to camp late and played FOUR different positions along the line. FOUR different assignments & FOUR different techniques this rookie, this kid had to learn. But yea, you're right, let's right him off already since no rookie has ever increased their level of play after their first season

I think many including myself's problem with Peat is how high he was picked vs. his production on the field. If there was a redraft, can anyone say you'd still take Peat 13th overall?

I mean, isn't it safe to say that if you draft a tackle 13th overall and after 1 season he's moving to guard, that he's a bit of a disappointment?
Tackles are more valuable. If you draft at 13 overall, you probably think you should be set at tackle for the next 10 years.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems like that can't be good.

I don't know what you saw as mediocre play when Peat switched to LG. The left side of the line was solidified when Peat stepped up. It was the right side of the line the looked mediocre during that portion of the season.

If Peat is moving to G, why pass on Tunsil?

But but but the ST said Peat would be starting at RT this season!!
I'll wait for the apologizes

Agreed. He was playing fine at left guard until the back of his legs got rolled up on while at that position and he got nicked up.

The saints won a super bowl with strong play up the middle. Yes it was unconventional, but it happened. Our tackles Have never been that great (even though Stitch made the Pro bowl). If Peat turns out to be a pro bowl guard, then I can't see why anyone would complain. If he fails as a guard the he would probably fail as a tackle.

too early to complain...cooks had a pretty average rookie year considering the expectations (yes even with injury).
now look at him, yet some of you STILL want to bitch and moan.
The only player I would have preferred over peat was DVP because we needed to groom a WR with Colston's departure and Snead was still a complete unknown. No it wasn't going to be Collins and lets stop it there.
Now if we picked DVP, I think this draft would have played out with us taking Whitehair > Thomas.
Question now is, what is better? DVP + Whitehair or Peat + Thomas
