it won't be a big hit because he was already counting 1.4 mil against the cap correct?

Correct.
His $1.431M tender offer was in the cap before the new contract.

Word on the street is the first year is less than $2m, so at most it'll add $500k but it could wind up less than $1.4m by as much as $800k.

I remember seeing this brought up but I don't recall the answer. The Saints don't have to match the exact deal the Falcons offered, just the financial totals in a fashion agreeable to the player. Am I right?

not sure, pft has spent a lot of time talking about jax may construct a mack deal so that mack has a player option after next year.

From what I read, the saints need to maintain only the overall agreed terms, but not the structure of the contract. For example, if Bush's deal with ATL had $3 million guaranteed, the saints have to keep that much guaranteed but could shift how it is distributed.

Correct. The big part is the player has to agree to any changes.

But for instance, if ATL had a 1st year base of $1.5m and a total signing bonus of $500k, we could switch it to a 1st year base of $1m and a signing bonus of $1m.

If they didn't have any other bonuses, that would take the 1st year cap hit from $1.75m to $1.5m.
