I was gonna wait until free agency had passed more before reposting this but I'm seeing increased ranting of how terrible the front office drafts are. They aren't the best but they aren't even in the lower half of draft results. This is as comprehesive of a study that I have seen. Every pick is graded from didn't play and useless to great. Take some time to peruse.

Saints Totals:
23
Didn't play
Were immediately traded or didn't make the cut
51
Useless
Rarely — or never — saw the field
17
Poor
Had underwhelming careers
15
Average
Decent choices, but nothing special
13
Good
Solid, bread-and-butter players
13
Great
Worthy of telling the grandkids about
1
Legendary
You'll see these guys in the Hall of Fame

I would be willing to be that between 2007-2016, we would be around 25th. The last 10 years have been pretty bad!!

I kept saying teams draft a lot worse than people think and the Saints have been middle of the pack (we were higher until the 3 bad year run but are back on the upswing).

Our drafts are reflective of the league average. Very few (2-3) teams draft better than the rest of the league, but there are a few that draft way worse (you can probably guess).

The Saints have scored in the category of players who excelled the most after leaving the team that drafted them. They have the top 2- Brees and Glover. 3 of the top 10, include Joe Horn

No surprise at all which team was last btw. They need to gut that scouting department and higher GB's for $100 mil or something. Year in and year out, with top picks no less, they are completely inept.

Ranked 12th in drafting ability, all things considered.

So many of these picks (even high ones) are complete and total busts. We've avoided that in the first three rounds for the most part, which puts us far above most teams in that regard.

Our later round picks, to no surprise because it's league standard, have been lackluster.

For the "They are terrible!" crowd note that you rank #12 over ten years with 1 HOFer (Evans), 13 great, 13 average, and 74 that did not play at all or were useless players. The perception that they are bad to me is that peeps do not understand how low the average success rate is. Yeah, I want better too but they are in the upper half. I think the 2016 draft added to the equation would only boost their rating as well.

Someone posted success rates for each round (which I had bookmarked on my old computer) and the numbers would shock most people.

I think it was less than half of 3rd rounders ever start (period) in the league. Not one start.

We've had mid and late round gems, but out top picks haven't been up to snuff. I guess it all comes out in the wash.

Go look at most top picks and you'll be shocked how wrong your assumption is.

And we've had far fewer late round gems than people think. We are about average there (going back to 96; if this was just Payton era we'd be higher).

Cameron Jordan, Mark Ingram, Vacarro, Cooks, Rankins looked good last year. No high pick in 2012. Am I missing something? Hell even Peat has found himself starting at both LG and LT with solid play. I mean you aren't gonna bat 100% but we haven't done bad with first picks.

Almost every pick in rounds 1-3 has been a multi year starter for us (and some started for other teams).

And some people will say that they were only average or below average starters, but there are MANY 1-3 rounders that never start 1 game for their teams. So we are far ahead of many teams in those terms.

I think Brown was the worst pick we've had in the top 3 rounds and even he at least started.

And then there's the fact that because of trades and bounty gate we've had by far the least picks in the first three rounds.

Hell if we had kept all of our first three round picks we'd likely be much higher on the list.

Yeah, we have some good ones for sure, but we've also had sed Ellis, Charles brown, prob, Anthony, and SJB. Many more that started, but were very meh, like ingram, peat, meach, kikaha, and porter. I think we've done better in late rounds, but slightly worse in early rounds. Just my opinion, but when did this board magically flip from hating the Loomis/sp draft record?

Most of those were somewhat meh, but not bad. SJB was only one I'd say was bad

Damn forgot SJB.

But again most of the guys you named were multi year starters.

There are first rounders that never start a game. You are thinking the draft is much more assured than it actually is.

We've done MUCH better than most teams in regards to the first 3 rounds.

You need more than meh out of your first and second round picks. SJB was an epic, scorched earth bust. Prob and chas brown were busts. We forced the issue with Anthony and Ellis, but it's clear now they were never worth the slots.

I think I'm being fair here. This fo struck gold with graham, evans, nicks, strief, Colson, stills, morestead, bushrod, and ninkovich. I think we are better than most from rounds 3 down.

Not sure I'd call PRob a bust. Every team misses in first 2 rounds. My argument is not that there haven't been misses. It's just we aren't missing anymore than most other teams. And Anthony and Kikaha are still up in air
