Thoughts on Del Rio replacing fat Gregg?

Also, I definitely see Tez Wilson starting at WLB next year.

Could the saints lose Colston and still be ok? I think so, especially with the emergence of graham. Colston seemed to regress a little bit this year

no way...dude plays like a complete beast and sells out hard to get the ball...it would be pretty arrogant to think we'd be fine without him. Do you really think ANY DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE fears our other receivers? Colston and Graham open it up for everyone...and if we lose 12 I think an already finesse based offense loses quite a bit of its toughness. Colston's presence is one of the major factors to Graham getting so many productive plays. If Meachem goes I'd hope arrington could replace him.

True great points

But I was operating under the assumption that graham would become our number one receiver from the TE position if we lose Colston

I am all for bringing Colston back but not overpaying him in the process.

Freakish TEs like graham are the future of the game

Give me Spagnuolo. Del Rio only has a year of DC experience

I just don't to waste these monster years from brees. Give us a middle of the pack defense, at least.

True, but I figure Spags goes to Philly and the Iggles move Castillo back to offense. Plus, nine years of HC experience should offset the lack of DC experience, right?

This is assuming GW follows Fisher to StL...

Payton and brees are far more stable than Reid and Vick

No doubt, but he kinda seems like an NFC east guy. His Rams teams did a good job of stifling us this year and in 09, similar to GW's Redskin team in 06. Regardless, he or Del Rio would bring a more fundamentally sound D should GW head to StL.

Colston's pretty freaky too. We can't just "replace" him and keep on rolling. We need to make re-signing him a priority. Don't overpay, of course, but pay him what he's worth. Which might be a bit. But our offense will absolutely regress without both him and Graham.

As much as I like harper as a pass rusher and run stuffer. I feel like we need a change. Unsure of his contract status, but we need someone who can make plays in coverage. As long as GW continues to blitz linebackers our secondary will continue to get burned in coverage. We don't have the personnel to run these plays correctly. Don't get me wrong, the defense kept us in this last one up until about 5 minutes left in the fourth, but then they just fell into the same shitty pattern we've been dealing with.

There is some good news in all of this. Last season we had some glaring issues, many of which we corrected over the offseason.

We were absolutely horrible in special teams. Returning kicks were pedestrian, but mainly covering punts and kickoffs. We went out in the offseason and drafted many players to play special teams and add athleticism, and we went out and signed free agents who were special teams studs on their previous teams.

We had zero running game down the stretch of the season and had Reggie depart. We went out and got Sproles who more than replaced Reggie, and we drafted a running back to help out with our poor 3rd and short rush conversions. The coaching staff rotated the running backs throughout the season to keep them fresh for the postseason.

Now we have glaring issues with our Safeties, Pass Rush, and Linebackers. Some of these will be helped with bringing in free agents and hopefully hitting on someone in the draft in rounds 2/3 who can make an immediate impact. We have a group of young linebackers who could step in and make better contributions than the current group(Casillas, Wilson). Chances are we wont be able to pick up a Defensive End who can pass rush well in the 2nd round or later in the draft so we would have to hope Galette, Romeus, or a Free Agent could get the job done.

The Safeties might be placed in better positions once Williams is gone as our DC, who knows maybe Harper will be moved to LB. I expect many things to change with Williams' departure, mainly better coverage, but not the pass rush unless we pick up better players. Vilma might be along for part of the year, we might see Dunbar make the permanent switch to Middle.

The Saints defense when trying to preserve leads somehow this season forgot how to play defense and allowed offenses to march up and down the field the final drives of the halves. When we played safe on 3rd and very long we got gashed far too many times as well. We definitely need a new scheme/strategy and different attitude from the players in these situations.

We definitely need a change from the scheme of this season. We had the lowest conversion rate of pressure on QB's compared to how often we brought pressure. The Saints bring many players on a blitz but far too often it is picked up and blocked. The players are too obvious pre-snap, too slow/not coordinated stunts... Whatever the reason is the offense blocks the blitz more than well enough.

And as you said our blitz packages leave our Secondary with hardly any room for error. We have one deep Safety who simply can't cover the entire backend of the field. Too many times offenses complete passes on us and that Safety is too late to get there and defend the pass. The Secondary needs help playing zone as well, the Safety isn't where he should be sometimes, and others the Corner thinks the Safety has help over the top on their side.

You figure that after 2+ seasons of having the same players defending athletic TE's and failing over and over those players would have help in defending the TE's instead of being called on to 1v1 defend them over and over again.

After last season on defense we said:
Vilma, Jenkins, Porter/Greer, Ellis, Casillas(was the plan) were fine and we needed to upgrade the other positions.

After this season other than Greer, Robinson/Patrick I'm not entirely confident about other positions. Some are projects/learning, others are getting worse or have been completely exposed.

I'm undecided on Jenkins. He had some great plays this season, but today was absolutely horrid from him. Granted he was put in very bad positions by Williams for much of the season, which could change for the better with a new DC.

Safeties and CBs will remain intact, sans Porter.

We cannot be content with our LBs.

We got zero pass rush all year. Find out what Justin Smith did to resurrect his career and let Will Smith know.

Resign Colston. He just fits. Not sure who could do better.

I love Nicks, but you have to let him walk. Can't lock up that much $ in 2 guards while having glaring holes in the D. Address OG in draft/fa.

Keep Brees, Nicks, and Colston. Let go Meachem, Arrington looks like his replacement.

GW has got to go. Lets find out if our problem is scheme or personnel. IMO we don't get interceptions due to putting the secondary personnel on islands; therefore, they can not take the risk of playing for the pick. Just look at the stats. The most blitzing team in the NFL and the worst at getting picks. If your blitz doesn't work you get burned and ours didn't work 95% of the time.

I hope we can keep Porter because he can cover, but I am not sure if that is going to be possible or not.

Replace Haper and SHanle. SHanle is slow and HArper is a huge liability in pass coverage. I beleive both were involve in the touchdown play that won the game for SF. SHanle sqats down in and pass the TE off to Harper who is slow to react and try's to jar the ball loose with a huge hit at the goal line.

Okay first post on here, took me awhile to get registered. Wish it wasn't after our playoff loss but oh well. Here's what we need to happen this offseason:

Defense
1) Don't let the door hit you on the way out GW.
2) Get Spagnuolo in here as quickly as possible. Del Rio would be okay as a second choice but overall he doesn't excite me like Spagnuolo would.
3) Trade up to the first round in the draft to try to get Melvin Ingram or Courtney Upshaw. Both are elite linebackers who might actually be able to get pressure on a QB without blitzing.
4) Replace Harper and Shanle.

Offense
1) Resign Brees, Colston, and Nicks, they are all too important to let go.
2) Probably can let Meachen go in order to pay Colston what he wants to stay.

Make all of that happen and I think we'll be in good shape next year. Does anyone know though who we are going to try to pick up in the draft in terms of linebackers or defensive line?
