Saints apparently leaning against Butler trade

It sounds like that offer might not come ahead of Thursday's draft in Philadelphia. At least it might not come from the New Orleans Saints.
The Saints were hot after Butler early in the restricted free-agent process, even holding a visit with the corner.
The price tag to bring Butler to New Orleans, however, could be more that Sean Payton and Co. are willing to pay.
TheMMQB's Peter King reported Monday that the Saints are leaning towards keeping their first three picks (11, 32, 42), per a source familiar with the team's thinking. Per King, the Saints believe the depth of the draft could land them several Day 1 contributors between picks 25 and 75. The Saints seem to have soured on the thought of dealing one or more high picks for Butler, and paying the corner a long-term, big-money contract.
While flipping draft picks for an established playmaker seems like a prudent move for a franchise that has repeatedly swung and missed on defensive additions, the Saints appear to value those selections more highly at this stage.
New Orleans owns two first-round picks (11, 32) a high second-rounder (42) and two third-round picks (76, 103). In a draft deep at defensive back, and the Saints needing playmakers at every level to improve a limp defense, sinking multiple assets to acquire Butler doesn't seem as sexy as a few months ago.
There is still a chance before the weekend that the Saints or another club swoops in and offers Belichick a bounty for a player who seems to have an expiration date in New England. If no offer comes, the Patriots will simply head into 2017 with two Pro Bowl-caliber corners as they seek a sixth Super Bowl trophy. Throne of Ease, indeed.

I have nothing against Butler, but I'm all for not getting bent over the wood barrel by the hoodie for 1 guy.

I wouldn't say low risk. You traded a top wr to improve the D and compete today. They absolutely have to hit on these picks.

Fine. Let's just move on and knock it out with the draft. One of Ireland's strengths as a gm in Miami was doing a good job at evaluating the exact types of players we have trouble finding. He brought a lot of talented players into the fold both in the front 7 and in the secondary there but his inability to find a passing game/qb and some questionable financial decisions killed him. I've probably been more critical towards him than most living down here in south Florida but hopefully his influence will be stamped all over this draft.
One thing about the whole Butler saga is the fact that I haven't heard any other teams mentioned as being interested in him( I very well could've missed something). In a league that has become so pass heavy and concerned with stopping the pass it's a little funny that nobody else has been linked with a cb that is considered an all pro at least in title. Many of us have expressed concern about breaking the bank over a guy from the patriots and I feel some teams may have the same feelings. Aqib Talib was a talented but troubled player before moving to NE and has been elite since leaving. If the deal was for a player of his caliber I think many would be for it...but the patriots system, impending financial cost, and asking price are definitely enough to give many pause it seems.

Exactly why I won't mind at all if we use one of those first 3 on a young(er) CB. Hoody and them want max compensation for this guy, and we are understandably hesitant. See how the chips fall come Thursday and if there's a run on CB's at some point in the first, use 32/42 as a backup plan to get Butler to NOLA.

I was down for the trade but I'm also sort of glad we are keeping the picks.
We haven't drafted well in the past, no, but if we can hit this year's draft like we did last year, getting several key contributors from a variety of positions, then we will still be able to compete.
More than ever though, I'd love to see us trade back just a few slots to pick up an extra 2nd rounder.

Butler is worth his contract and he's worth a high pick, but he's not worth both. Move on...

The best part I like in hearing this is that Loomis might be making a stand against getting arse raped by the Pats. I like that. We come up with our valuation and if that isn't enough for you then we move on. Makes me optimistic that if it does still happen it could be without #32.
I don't discount the possibility of it happening until right before the draft though. The Pats WILL be hungry for more picks with nothing until #72. My best try at objectivity says he's worth #42- and that is the high end.

I see it both ways. I would be ok with keeping picks or trading for Butler. One thing with trading for Butler is that he is a proven top db and with Brees at 38, and coming off three straight 7-9 seasons we are without question in win now mode.
I feel like drafting a db can be a high especially if we are counting on them to come in and make an impact day one. To me Butler is the safer route to go. His proven effectiveness at the position coupled with our inability to draft good dbs over the last several years.

I think it is a intentional leak. Basically trying to scare the Pats we walking or take this low 3rd pick. Play hardball Loomis freak the hoodie and Pats. lol

I can be ok either way. It would suck to overcompensate the pats for butler. The picks top 3 picks in 42 are all pretty valuable and opens up many doors with the options we have. I'd love butler to be a Saint. Maybe 3rd this year, 3rd next year.

11 obviously was never on the table, and I'm unsure if 32 would have been (maybe if they struck while the iron was hot and were ready to just get it done, but Butler dragged his feet).
Seems like 42 (and maybe a future 3rd?) would be the top end offer at this point.
Wait until 42 is on the clock and see if you like Butler plus a big deal better than the rookie options or not.
