Benson’s plan includes giving back to the city and the region in the sale of the team to its next owner. That new owner will be selected by Saints President Dennis Lauscha, with one condition set by Benson -- the team must stay in New Orleans. “Tom Benson, he came up with the idea of leaving everything to me. And then of course, I have no heirs. So my wish, and Dennis is the executor of my estate, my wish is to scatter all the goods and gifts that God has given me, and that Tom has given me to this city and community,” Benson said. The Saints and Pelicans owner said that while she hopes she has many years left, her succession plan includes selling both teams, with Lauscha in charge of the sale of the team and giving back to the community through the Gayle and Tom Benson Foundation.

Quite the kingmaker Lauscha will become

I know a lot of you don’t care about the Pelicans, but it’s a little concerning very little is said about them. Being a two team market has cache, even if you don’t like basketball.

The Pels will be the focus of tomorrow's article. The article on Lauscha specifically mentions the goal being to keep both teams in the city.

They’re releasing a second part specifically about the Pelicans. I believe it is three parts.
They made mention in the article that they will work to ensure both teams are here long-term.

Thanks guys. I was holding my breath reading the article waiting for the “yeah, but…” about both teams that I missed that. (I’m a native, so I’m biologically pessimistic).

They don’t have billions of dollars to become majority owner.

Benson said one stipulation when the Saints are put for sale is that they will stay in New Orleans.
“That’s going to be one of our stipulations when we sell the team is that it stays here, so we won’t sell again, it won’t sell to another person that wants to take it away,” Benson said.
when it all hit the fan i wasnt sure if it was gayle or rita who was the one only about the money. seeing this makes me think gayle never cared about the money
im sure some lawyer weasel can figure out a loophole but at least gayle wants it in the contract the team cant leave

True. But they don’t need to fund it alone. They can be the face and day to day operators with 10-20% ownership with a large, silent billionaire backer or group.
It’s been a trend lately. See Jeter with Marlins and ARod with timberwolves

Honestly, there shouldn’t be a reason for anyone to want to move it. We have a rabid, regional fan base.

I was hoping she would walk into Dennis’ office one day and be like “you got kids right? I’m going to will the teams to you.” Lol

I’m ok with Bezos buying the team. He can even renovate the moldy tower to look like his rocket ship.

Well gentlemen and ladies here’s your chance, start making your billions.

I wish the league would allow Benson to sell share to the people similar to Green Bay.
The Saints are valued at a little over 2 Billion.
Sell 20,000,000 shares at $100/each.

#1: Archdiocese of NO finna eat.
#2. The article mentions the Bills sale, but they had a ready-made local buyer in the owner of the Sabres. There’s only two people in the state of LA (Stuller & Goldring) who even have the net worth to come up with the $2 billion+ asking price of the team. I believe both of those guys net worth is centered around the value of their privately held businesses, which they are not going to liquidate, so neither is really a candidate.
#3: No one, local or not, is going to fork over $2 billion only to be handcuffed by a “can’t move the team” clause. It’s a pipe dream that any ownership change would not include a future risk of relocation.

The NFL won’t allow such a clause either. This is Gayle handling her business while she is alive. If such an owner shows up, good! The biggest piece is that her estate and proceeds from the sale will fund the charitable giving from her foundation, which will mostly be local.

Hopefully, she has the right accountants and lawyers that can keep the IRS at bay. Otherwise depending on when she goes the biggest benefactor will be the federal government.

I was hoping she would leave it to Lauscha as well but here we are.
It’ll be an ownership group of multiple investors. It would be neat if the Mannings were involved, but they may not want to with Arch in the league which he likely will be at that time.

It’s a beautiful thing that the Bensons are doing. God bless them.
It’s a shame that I have no faith that it can be carried out to its maximum effectiveness due to the political nature of the state and city.
