Read on profootballtalk.com that the Steelers are more likely to rest Roethlisberger if the Ravens win tonight. Apparently the thinking is that if the Ravens win, their chances of finishing with a better record is slim, so might as well rest him.

I was going to anyway

The one thing that worries me about this game is that San Diego's O-line has struggled this year and Baltimore has a stout defensive line. But on the other side of the ball, Joe Flacco is more than capable of screwing up their chances

This makes no sense at all.

Yes, it actually does. The Ravens win the tie breaker if they finish with the same record as the Steelers.

quote:

Per a league source, the decision as to Roethlisberger could hinge on the outcome of tonight’s game between the Ravens and the Chargers. If the 10-3 Ravens win, moving a game closer to the AFC North title that they’d win even if tied with the Steelers (thanks to a head-to-head sweep of Baltimore over Pittsburgh), the Steelers will be more likely to rest Roethlisberger. If, on the other hand, the Ravens lose the Steelers will be more likely to play Roethlisberger, given the opportunity to seize control of the division.

I'm glad the Chargers are winning, but I feel bad for Ravens fans. I spent some months working up in B-More, and they're a passionate fan base.

No it doesn't, they have the same record with 3 games remaining and they have already lost to mediocre teams on the road.

The Ravens already beat the Steelers twice this season...

you really don't think I know that. Doesn't change the fact that they had the same record with 3 games to play. (Assuming Baltimore won tonight) If Baltimore would have lost one of the final 2 games and Pitt won out, they would win the division. Which makes the argument of resting Ben only if Baltimore lost tonight irrelevant.

Basically what they are saying is Baltimore has no chance of losing the last two games, when they have already been beaten by mediocre teams on the road this season.

Because if (past tense, they lost) Baltimore loses to San Diego, then the Steelers have a chance to take the lead in the division with the Rams and the Browns as their next two opponents. If the Ravens would have won tonight, they would have the Browns and the Bengals left, and they would only need to beat one of them to win the division.

It's not a given the Ravens would have won both games, but the Steelers are trying to make a calculated risk on the health of their QB. It would make no sense to try to rush Ben back if the Ravens would have won tonight.
