Positive Thread - We Looked Elite Yesterday

On the road, even if it was just for 3.5 quarters.
We played the best defense in the league and were only stopped by some bs penalties and 1 bad int.
Defense forced 2 turnovers. That was shocking
Jahri Evans showed up for the first time this year, and with it Brees found his arm strength again...
Stills looked like a legit receiver again. Colston didn't drop any passes. Might have a legit group if we can get healthy.
Improvement. Time to learn how to close teams out. We're 1 play a game away from being one of the NFL's best teams. Time to put it together.

Penalties killed us and our inability to run against the top run d in the league did us in late.

And no Calvin Johnson. I did like what I saw from the D for the most part, but we can't forget he was out.

Yep. Reverse of the other losses actually. Running game cost us with that fumble too.
I'm okay with holding penalties if it keeps them off Drew. Cam Jordan's biggest play this year was a negative. You can't give them a 1D on that play. We aren't a good enough defense to get away with that.

True, but we had Corey White covering Golden Tate so nothing really changed.
Who knows, we might have won if he plays.
I honestly thought Sean Payton called a hell of a game yesterday. Hard to call a game when we're getting BS penalties on 3rd down conversions. The middle screen to Cadet should have sealed the game.

Did we even attempt a run before the INT? He can call a good game at times, but you can tell when he's decided to "go to the well" and completely ignore the run. You can hear a gigantic "sigh" from Saints nation at least twice a Sunday.

Officiating was horrible, ruined the flow to the game, and constantly called tick-tack penalties for both teams all game. When it came down to the last drive, we saw no flag at all for the same thing they called for 55+ minutes.
Btw:
Terry McAulay's groups this year:
G1: 21 penalties (10 home, 11 visitor)
G2: 15 penalties (4 home, 11 visitor)
G3: 9 penalties (4 home, 5 visitor)
G4: 15 penalties (6 home, 9 visitor)
G5: 11 penalties (4 home, 7 visitor)
G6: 21 penalties (9 home, 12 visitor)
League average this year is:
13.85 penalties/game
48.07% penalties/home team (6.66 penalties/home team)
His stats this year:
15.33 penalties/game (+1.48)
40.22% penalties/home team (6.17 penalties/home team)
I'm not blaming the refs for the loss, Brees taking a sack/not throwing a pick would have probably saved us.

Normally I veer away from sunshine posts, but I agree with you for the most part. Elite is a strong word; I think competitive would be more fitting based on Sunday's performance.
There's no doubting that poor officiating affected the game. There are 3, 4, maybe even 5 calls that were just flat out wrong, and when the roles were reversed they did not flag the Lions for similar fouls. That cannot be helped by our team, and honestly I hope they don't let this Sunday's ref bias stick in their craw, so to speak. I do think it affected their morale pretty badly during the game. Defensive penalties are the most deflating to a team, you literally get one flag and give the other team a whole other set of downs. When that happens you want to sink into a hole.
One positive is the coaching staff clearly came out with the right gameplan, which is something we haven't seen on the road thus far since playing the Eagles in the playoffs. They truly did dominate the game defensively for 55 minutes of regulation, which I was happy to see.
Offense was not dominant, and when the Lions defensive line figured out how to get through the line there were no adjustments, this was the case for at least the entire second half. The interior line looked like a video of a Katrina levy break. It was pathetic.
The game should not have been that close. A good New Orleans Saints team would have extended the lead in the 3rd and made the game completely out of reach. This is not a good offense, and it starts with the line and its position coaches.

I agree, but yesterday was one of the days where it made sense. It is frustrating when we're running well and then don't hand it off, yesterday wasn't one of those days

2-4.
0-4 away. 3 losses within 3 points.
3rd time giving leads away late in games.
This is a team that has lost something other than skill or talent... Can't finish games, and no matter how pedestrian we make good defenses look with our offense, we seem to be unable to finish strong.
What happened to that motto? We need to bring it back. We don't have that killer instinct anymore.
I'm the biggest sunshine pumper there is, but this loss is deflating and more concerning than the other 3 this season.

I'll agree that I think we looked probably our best all season for those 3 and a half quarters.
But I'll also say that if they had a healthy Megatron, Stafford probably throws for 400+ on us.

I'm fine with that. We were really taking it to them before that epic collapse. We should have been up by at least 3 scores.

Very true. We came ready to play and didn't fall into a road hole

What adjustment was to be made really? They were letting them get physical with our receivers and tackle our backs out the backfield.
Goodwin was out with an injury and Strief was banged up yet still tried to gut it out. That was the turning point up front.

Agreed

I really blame the refs for this. I'm probably being unreasonable, but that was a HUGE 3rd down conversion to PT for a 20 yard gain. Worst case scenario is that we pin them deep in their territory. Instead, we're facing a 3rd and 15+. We executed that play, and just got completely fricked.

I disagree, it is a good offense. It just isn't a dominant offense like we're used to in 2009 and 2011

Maybe Stafford locks onto him all game and leaves Golden alone. Might have worked out better for us

Elite teams don't collapse in the last 5 minutes. They put teams away.
This is way too sunshine. I need to put sunglasses on.

They could have at least tried to get Cooks the ball. It's like he wasn't even in the game plan.

Same could be said about our offense and Graham. He's easily 100 yards a game and 1 TD just himself. But yeah, I think not having Megatron in the lineup really helped our defense as well. To me the game was pretty evenly matched. When you have zebras in the lineup for the other team, it really does help tip those scales drastically.

No shite?
If only had added something else to make it not so outlandish. Like 3.5 quarters. Something that was supposed to be separate from the clearly horrific and pathetic collapse

How do you think we looked FOR 3.5 QUARTERS

Made this point in another thread, not running the ball in that drive was not our undoing. He tried to run the ball, we failed, as we had all day. Even with hindsight, throwing the ball actually helped our chances. If we ran time off the clock by running the ball poorly and had to punt, we probably would have not seen the last possession because if they scored, it would have been in the last seconds of the game. It could be argued we would have been in better field position because of the punt, but nothing is certain in the NFL. They could have squeaked out a good return or taken advantage of Corey White some more 20 yards a throw.

We looked good. Looked how we should have looked all year, and then we fell apart. Without their best offensive player and probably THE best offensive player in the game (outside of QBs).
I guess you're trying to make yourself feel better about this crushing loss and read into things that aren't there. So yay, we played well for 3.5 quarters...and we lost. Had the game pretty much won...and lost.
We've played through the easiest part of our grueling schedule and we are 2-4. We have some extremely tough games at home (Packers, Ravens, Bengals, 49ers) and our away schedule.
This team is missing its identity and a killer instinct, and I'm not sure how it lost it.

The loss was possibly season crushing and pathetic.
But, you said yourself that it is how we looked all year. That was the 1st time this year you could really say that about this team, is it not?
Are you under the impression that I think blowing the win is a good thing? What's your point? Teams watch film after a loss for a reason.

Debatable. 6 of the last 10 are at home. We get ATL in the Dome, Carolina twice, and Tampa again. We get a Chicago team that might be falling apart. Pitt doesn't look near as good as we thought they would.
Our hardest games are primetime in the Dome. we showed yesterday that we can move the ball on the best defense in the league...while on the road.

I agree. Hopefully we can find it in primetime
