"Ownership matters" is probably what I've learned the most out of this situation

That has to be the thing I've learned the most about the "dead money" situation (and the abysmal drafting).

In a bubble, we all know that having a good owner makes a difference. Guys like Mark Cuban and Robert Kraft make a huge difference in the organization.

But sometimes we think about owners as just money guys, they don't appear except to write checks or fire a guy every few years.

With Benson's health declining, an unsure succession plan for awhile, and Gayle having very little experience in this arena, the Saints have deteriorated with his health. No one is ruddering the ship except the two guys responsible for all of the piss-poor moves over the last 5 years: Loomis and Payton. These two inmates now run the asylum, and seemingly answer to no one.

And no one is holding either one accountable. I can't help but see a correlation between Benson's diminishing role and the fate of the team.

This next offseason with tons of cap money will be extremely telling.

It's not like Benson in good health is some awesome owner, but it's clear that the absence of an owner has created zero accountability.

The Loomis and Payton act has gone stale here.

I don't think Benson knows or cares because he is nearly on his death bed.

It is soon time to start the rebuild and clean house!

I think this is how Benson wanted it knowing his role would be diminishing more and more.
Two guys he trusted and had brought him a championship running the ship.
I think we are stuck for better or worse with PayLoom inc. for a long time to come.

So situations of: Junior Galette, Jimmy Graham, Brandon Browner, Keenan Lewis, Jahri Evans, Marques Colston, and a very small degree of CJ Spiller comes down to Tom Benson's lack of involvement in the organization? How fricking stupid is this thread, i'll tell you. it's a fricking 11 out of 10. You should be ashamed of yourself fun bunch. OH NOZ WWL SAID 40 million DEAD CAP... I THINK I NEED TO MAKE LOUD NOISES>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This board is filled with retards.

On Mike Detillier's show on ESPN radio Lafayette last Saturday, I caught the very end of an intriguing comment he made about Tom Benson. He said the word was that Benson chastised Loomis and Payton in the wake of poor attendance at the preseason games this year. Also Benson gave them an ultimatum. I for one believe that story to be false. Anyone else hear that story?

Some of the moves can be defended, and there is a certain amount of respect that can be given for recognizing mistakes and doing something about them.

But the sheer amount of mistakes, almost all big free agent signings, and several drafts with almost nothing to show for them...it would get most GM/Coaches fired.

I'm not sure the sheer amount of frick up that has happened over the past few years would have happened with a cognizant owner.

Add to this the constant peddling of "nostalgia" that has gotten consistently more and more pronounced ever since the Champions Square rebuild... in a marketing or PR sense it kinda reveals that looking forward is not really part of this team's ownership or management structure.

I highly doubt it is true. Detillier is not nearly as connected to the Saints organization as he makes it out to be.

I didn't hear the interview, but I doubt he gave SP an ultimatum considering he just got that extension. Maybe Loomis, but I doubt it.

You have zero evidence to put the blame on some bad personnel signings on Mickey's platter. It's also been documented how Mickey and Sean have butted heads and part of reason why Ireland was brought in for a 3rd party. People not seeing the benefits of shedding the dead cap space this year are oblivious.

The past three years we've been shedding, most on purpose.

The 2 that weren't were Galette who went full retard but was an awesome paas rusher, and Graham who delayed the WR vs. TE case past the deadline to trade a tagged player (and no one was giving up big money and picks if it was ruled he was a WR) so the Saints had to either sign him or let him go with zero compensation.

In the end we did the right thing with Graham even though it cost us cap. We got Unger who just extended and a first rounder who started every game a Mike last year.

And people don't understand that the dead money is built in on purpose to get cheap early years well below market value. Overall we come out even or ahead in terms of per year even with the dead money.

Players like Lofton and Grubbs cost us less than their per year contract even with the dead money and just for the years they played.

It's being severely overblown and we have at least $40 mil in space next year because we were willing to cut the fat now.

people that cant see the reason we have been doing this is because it is an attempt to correct mistakes. Which both, in part, is the reason we wont be contending for anything anytime soon. You cant expect to win games when the other team you play has $30mil more of committed money on their roster than you do on gameday.

ah, so that's why the refs made the game deciding PI call, he had the dead cap space card in his back pocket he threw out.

"correct mistakes"... what the frick else are you supposed to do with mistakes other than correcting?

Our preseason games were on a Friday and Thursday including the 4th game of preseason which is worthless.
