Well we knew Lewis was likely to miss around 6 games so not a surprise if it's him. More of a surprise with Ellerbe as we've heard nothing on him, but between the cuts and non cuts and the status of Lewis I think it's Lewis.

Special teams. Same as last year. Payton is very serious about the bottom of the roster being good on special teams.

Saints released last year's 2nd-round pick CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste, per ESPN's Field Yates

So many players the Saints could have picked there. Absolutely unforgivable pick. What a shitty player to get cut in his second year after being a 2nd round pick

What's the difference between PUP and IR with designation to return?

If you start training camp physically unable to perform (PUP) the team can put you on the PUP list (like Byrd and Colston). If you stay on that list throughout training camp (like Byrd) the team has the option to put you on the regular season PUP list. If you are put on that list you are out for at least 6 weeks.

For players that get hurt during camp/preseason the team can choose one of them to put on IR- Designated to Return. They cannot go on PUP since they did not start and stay on PUP. The player is out for the first 8 weeks.

So with a guy like Lewis who has a good chance of missing at least 6 weeks this may be the best option for the team to not have a spot taken up for a month or two with a guy that can't play.

Oh ok, makes sense. So only one player can be put on IR with designation to return?

And you can only be put on PUP if you started training camp on PUP and stayed on it throughout preseason? Just trying to understand it all

Eta: essentially, if a player participated at all during training camp/preseason, he isn't eligible for regular season PUP?

Right. Only one player can be designated to return from IR, and you have to go on PUP before training camp starts and if you practice you come off which kills your eligibility for it.

So only Byrd is eligible for us but he would have been put on regular season PUP today I believe, which he wasn't so it looks like he is close to returning.

And the only injured players we have that would go on IR with the designation are Lewis, Ellerbe, and Humber but I doubt they'd use it on Humber.

Plus reading between the lines we kept only four ILBs while we kept six CBs. That points to Lewis going on IR with the designation, otherwise we'd be extremely thin at LB. That and we know Lewis' injury will be at least 4-6 weeks.

Dude was just completely dumb it seems. Besides him, the only other 2nd rounder we picked post Super Bowl year was none other than Charles Brown, and we all know how that one ended up. The 2nd round hasn't been too kind to us unfortunately. Hopefully Kikaha changes that this season.

Well, we better get one of the cuts back. The roster is only carrying 4 wideouts currently.

Welp looks like I'll have to take my month break. Might not be the worst thing with how negative this place has become lately. See you guys on October 6th. Just remember, I'm always watching.

Don't leave yet Melvin. If you read the thread you'll see he was only released for one day while we had to wait for the IR- Designated to Return window to open up (you have to keep that player for one extra day).

The only reason we cut Joe was because he wouldn't be exposed to waivers like the 90% of other candidates that could realistically be cut are and that he was willing to play ball and sign back with us(and wouldn't warrant a big contract from another team).

MAYBE we could have done that with McCown? But QBs are always higher priority on teams' lists so you never know.

Yeah I made a 1 month ban bet that Joe would make the team.
Bones, so he still might make it? When will we know?

Joe Morgan will be on the team in the next two days. I dunno if you are in some gray area with regards to your bet, because he didn't "make it" but thst will change.

Today between noon and three I think.

And yeah he was told he made the team and then they must have had to pick someone to cut for a day while waiting for the (absolutely stupid rule) window to open up for the IR- Designated to Return player (which will likely be Lewis).

Joe is one of the safest cuts to make because he was on a one year deal, isn't going to get a big money offer, and isn't exposed to waivers.
